2012 has certainly been Chief Keef's year: the 17-year-old Chicago emcee was freed from prison, dropped "Don't Like," was remixed by Kanye, performed at Lolla, tweeted in bad taste over a rival rapper's death, Instagrammed oral sex, signed to a major label and is getting his own Beats by Keef headphones. And he's also going to release a real album with music. That's assuming his "Finally Rich" album from Interscope doesn't get pushed back from its Dec. 18 release date, which has pretty much become the standard for most rap albums anymore.

*** (of 4) Most would agree that one characteristic of great musicians is the ability to identify with the problems of the average listener. Two questions, though: What if your biggest problem is that you're just too fresh? What if you have an abundance of women at your disposal, and you're just not sure how many of them would fit into a beach cabana? If these are your everyday worries, rising rap star Ty Dolla $ign feels your pain. In recent years Ty (real name: Tyrone Griffin)

This just in from Canada: The Vancouver Canucks held an online contest to pick the song the team skates out to before the game (Japandroids beat out Nickelback). C'mon, we all know Chicago never takes a backset to Vancouver. These blood-pumping tunes are guaranteed to get Chicago crowds amped from the start. . Cubs "Riding The Storm Out," REO Speedwagon I almost suggested "L's Anthem" by Lil' Durk, honestly, both for local ties and the fact the Cubs see a lot of "L"s over the course of the season.

If Jay-Z and Kanye West didn't think their collaboration was an event, they wouldn't have called it "Watch the Throne. " In terms of modesty, these guys exist somewhere between "none" and "LeBron James. " Of course, public response certainly has matched the project's self-satisfaction. Bloggers breathlessly dissected early singles "H.A.M. " and "Otis"; a freaking New York planetarium housed the record's listening party; and the album's stunningly un-leaked release brought music fans together, at least on Twitter, for a day of collective listening.

Wednesday marks the biggest day in the history of New York University: Bay Area rapper/Internet force of nature Lil B The Based God will hold a lecture at the school's Kimmel Center. "It's gonna be a real progressive talk and when everybody leaves, their lives will be changed," he told FUSE. The gambit seems to have paid off: The announcement became a worldwide trending topic after he tweeted it. The Based God isn't the first rapper to grace the hallowed halls of academia. UGK member Bun B teaches a class at Rice University in Houston and...

*** (out of four) No, Nicki Minaj still hasn't made an album that consistently brandishes her best asset. (Not that one, dude.) I'm fine with that. Of course, it would be great if Minaj uncorked the jaw-dropping skills flashed in guest spots on Kanye West's “Monster” for an entire record. In its most exhilarating moments, her flow sounds like a rap roller coaster with a mad scientist running the controls. Still, “Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded” lands closer to the center of the target than its predecessor, “Pink Friday.” As if...

It's probably not a coincidence that everyone involved with the Under the Influence of Music Tour 2014, arriving in Tinley Park on Aug. 5 and at Wisconsin's Alpine Valley Music Theatre on Aug. 9, has expressed strong affection for pot, and that tickets for the shows go on sale at 4:20 p.m. Friday. I'm not saying this concert will be heavy on marijuana use, just that you might be as far away as Lake Geneva and still able to catch a contact high. Maybe pack some chips? Anyway, the tour, featuring Wiz Khalifa, Tyga, Ty Dolla $ign, Rich Homie Quan, Sage the Gemini,...

**** (out of 4) Full disclosure: I am a bona fide fan of R. Kelly's music. So much so that I co-host a bimonthly party called Bump & Grindcore where we celebrate R&B of the '90s and 2000s, using him as the inspiration. This review exists solely to critique the music, not the man. No attempt will ever be made to make light of the allegations in his past. Got it? Good. To correct a current misunderstanding about the genre: Generally, R&B music is about  love, sex, and what happens when those two things intersect.

DJ Drama may have the most famous shout in hip-hop, if not all of music. The Atlanta DJ, whose Gangsta Grillz mixtape releases with artists like T.I., Young Jeezy and Lil Wayne helped define the modern hip-hop distribution model, has shouted his boasts and observations over the music of many of the biggest stars in hip-hop and R&B, often right before they broke through into mainstream success. Recent projects bearing the familiar “Gangsta Grizz-ills” and “DRAMATIC” drops include Meek Mill's “Dreamchasers 2” mixtape, the most downloaded...
