New breweries need to stand out if they are going to make an impact in Chicago's busy craft beer scene. Forbidden Root , a new Chicago brewery set to hit taps in early June, is poised to do it. Calling itself a 'botanical brewery,' Forbidden Root uses roots, herbs and spices in its beers, harkening back to a somewhat forgotten American brewing tradition. The result is a lineup of beers that are unique, complex and probably unlike any other craft beer you've recently tried. News about the brewery recently has focused on its efforts to open a West Town taproom , but as zoning concerns...

After a West Town bar fight left one woman in need of more than 150 stitches, a Skokie woman was arrested Monday and charged with aggravated battery for use of a deadly weapon and causing great bodily harm. That weapon was a piece of glass from a mug that the woman, Vanessa Suarez, broke over the victim's head at Grand Bar at 1600 W. Grand Ave., according to state prosecutors. Prosecutors said a dispute between the two women led to the assault on the evening of March 16 after the victim had a confrontation with Suarez's husband.

Leopold 1450 W. Chicago Ave. 312-348-1028 Rating: !!! (out of 4) Off to a good start The Scene: On a recent Saturday night, we found West Town eatery Leopold busy enough to feel happening, but not so packed that we couldn't score a table for four with zero notice. The long, corridor-like space starts with lounge seating in the front window and ends in the back with an open kitchen. In between, an extra-long bar lit by hanging candlelabras runs along one side of the room, while banquettes upholstered with creamy off-white fabric line the other.
