If you walk into a Boystown bar on any given day - especially during the summer - and ask the bartender for his most popular drink, nine times out of 10 he'll serve you a vodka soda. Vodka is to Chicago gay men as beer is to Chicago Cubs fans: invariably linked. However, a storm is brewing over vodka - specifically Russian vodka - as Russian President Vladimir Putin advances a startling anti-gay movement in his country. But is vodka really the fight we should be picking? Ummmm ... no. Russian legislation does things like ban gay couples from adopting, criminalizes gay "propaganda"...

A Chicago man was arrested Sunday after he was accused of biting a Jewel-Osco store security guard while trying to flee the store without purchasing the two bottles of vodka tucked into his coat, county prosecutors said. John Adkisson, 44, was arrested at the supermarket's 3531 N. Broadway location, where he was spotted by a security guard removing the vodka from a shelf and trying to exit the store without paying, according to a police report. The report said Adkisson, who did not appear in court because he is being treated for injuries in a hospital, tried to escape...

Think of it as a means to drink away the sadness of the Sriracha plant partially shutting down.  Phillips Distilling Company, makers of UV Vodka, announced Monday Sriracha is joining their ranks of flavored liquor, which also includes cake, caramel and "blue. " According to a press release from the company, the vodka infuses a mix of "chili peppers, vinegar and garlic" in order to "create an authentic sriracha flavor that is the right balance of spice, tang and sweetness.

The owners of Halsted vodka want you to raise a glass, have fun and support LGBT causes--all at the same time. "Here's a product that the gay community likes and spends money on," said Jennifer Schulze, one of the owners of the Chicago-based and Colorado-distilled company. "Wouldn't it be nice if some of that money came back into the gay community?" Halsted vodka was three years in the making, Schulze said, with the flash of inspiration coming from a group of friends talking about how they could benefit their favorite causes...

When Tremaine Atkinson and his partners open CH Distillery in the West Loop this summer, he knows some skeptics will turn up their noses at a vodka-focused distillery. While bourbon and gin have recently gained popularity, bartenders anecdotally acknowledge a bit of a vodka backlash. "I think they're missing out," Atkinson said of consumers who categorically ignore vodka. "I have nothing against the other spirits, but what's cool about vodka is that it gives you a way to really let very fresh ingredients shine.
