It's never too early to start thinking about the NFL playoffs. In fact, now is the perfect time to start thinking about the NFL playoffs. With struggling San Diego in town to face the Bears and just six games remaining after this week, Sunday's matchup at Soldier Field was what you might call a huge game. By the time the Bears took the field, NFC North rival Detroit had already won to move a game ahead of the Bears. The Chargers had lost four straight games and had watched as two AFC West teams won before kickoff.

The man made an early morning trek to North Avenue Beach to photograph Sunday night's super moon as it set. But just minutes before sunrise, state prosecutors said, he was assaulted by a group of men with a beer bottle. State prosecutors said the alleged robbers surrounded the photographer, Ting Shen, 24, who tried to defend himself by swinging the tripod at his assailants. But Ting could not keep them from fleeing with two cameras, the tripod, and a New York Yankees cap. Police officers arrested three men for the armed robbery around 5:15 a.m., according to police...

Character, not characters. I see the Bears stunned no one and went with Phil Emery as their new general manager. Oh, I can see why. Look at these stunning credentials: Character. Hardworking. Honesty. Integrity. Hardworking. Character. Yeah, OK. I'm really sick of that guy. Sound familiar? Here are others who had those traits: Dave Wannstedt, Dick Jauron, Mark Hatley, Jerry Angelo, Jack Pardee, Neill Armstrong, Abe Gibron and Jim Dooley. I'd rather have the guy nobody likes but will kick some tail (yes, that's Mike Ditka.

Excuse Bears fans for getting a little excited Tuesday. The news that the Bears had hired Jeremy Bates as their quarterbacks coach was welcomed with mostly open arms. Why? Because Bates worked with Bears quarterback Jay Cutler in Denver from 2006 to '08. "I'm very excited to be working with Jeremy Bates again," Cutler said on the team's website. "We got the right guy for the job. "He's a grinder. He's a guy that's going to work extremely hard to find weaknesses in defenses and he's going to be able to present it to us in a way that we...

Lo', behold, it's a sign of light. That was some terrible English, and half those words probably don't exist - yet - but the Bears may have gotten one right. Jeremy Bates, quarterbacks coach and future foul language confidant of Jay Cutler, welcome aboard. I'm so glad it's a) someone Cutler has worked with before and b) someone Cutler has worked really well with before. As in 2008, Pro Bowl season, 4,500 yards. You figure with Bears QBs at their usual 1,000 yards-a-season clip, it takes 4.5 years to come up with that around here.

Sick of Dwight Howard trade rumors? Get ready for NFL free agency madness that could dwarf the rumors surrounding the big man. On Tuesday, NFL teams can start signing free agents. Did you hear that, Bears? The biggest catch, of course, is quarterback Peyton Manning. Manning, formerly of the Indianapolis Colts, has already visited Arizona and Denver. Reports suggest those two are the front-runner to land him, but Manning also is visiting the Miami Dolphins on Tuesday before free-agency begins at 3 p.m. But Tennessee Titans owner Bud Adams has made...
