I know things are supposed to be all Valentine's Day-y, with streets chock-full of pink hearts and movie posters for that new Katherine Heigl movie, "The Big Wedding," but let's take a break from all that love and fun to talk about something super not fun but also super important: violence against women. I know, I warned you it wasn't going to be fun. This week, the Senate passed a bill reauthorizing the Violence Against Women Act, placing the focus square on the House. VAWA was enacted in 1994 to protect women, who are the primary victims of abuse, from all forms of violence.

Attention, men: It's officially the worst day of the year - the day before Valentine's Day - brought to you exclusively by Hallmark. Rather than filling your hearts with romantic comedy highlights, Valentine's Day instead opts to send you into cardiac arrest. But no matter how much you hate the holiday, your girlfriend doesn't. In fact, she loves it. She craves it. She needs it - like a newborn needs its mother. Or like the Republicans need a likable candidate. But I get it. Even though I am a girl, I commiserate with you men out there who see V-day as nothing but a superficial waste of...

If Valentine's Day isn't shaping up to be an affair to remember, you can always, well, have an affair to remember. More than 175,000 Chicagoans are members of Ashley Madison , a controversial dating Web site that caters to people in relationships interested in adultery. The service boasts more than 12.6 million members. The site experiences some of its highest membership bumps this week because Feb. 13 is Mistress Day (when cheaters indulge their mistresses because they are busy with their significant others on Valentine's Day)

So you've met a hot guy, and he looks exactly like "True Blood"star Ryan Kwanten, but he's lame as hell. Would you put a bag over any conversation and do your business, or kick him to the curb? That's the quandary Jess (Zooey Deschanel) faces in the "Valentine's Day" episode of Fox's"New Girl," airing at 8 p.m. Feb. 14. Kwanten guest stars as Oliver, a hot guy Jess meets when her roomies take her out on Valentine's Day. But as you can see from the video clips in the player above, Oliver is pretty ... boring.

The setup: We're finally coming down from our Valentine's Day sugar high, and now here comes Easter on Sunday. Time for a faceoff! Emily Van Zandt likes Easter candy; Victoria Rodriguez prefers Valentine's Day sweets. Victoria: When I was a little girl, I would wake up on Valentine's Day to find a big, heart-shaped chocolate box and two smaller ones on our dining room table. The bigger box was for Mom and the two smaller ones for my twin sister and me. I will take Valentine's Day candy over Easter candy anytime because it holds a special place in my heart.

Valentine's Day is less than a week away: Where are your plans? Whether you've been procrastinating because you just started seeing someone/you're flying solo/you just completely forgot, there's no excuse not to celebrate with the number of last-minute options out there. It's not too late to give yourself or your significant other some love, whether you revel in traditionally romantic gestures or you'd be more likely to eat hearts than give them. All events are Feb. 14 unless otherwise noted.

So much for best-laid plans. A few years ago, a man asked his girlfriend to take a tour of Sixteen restaurant as they dined there. She wouldn't budge. Nervous, the man excused himself from the table. It was time for Plan B. He expressed concern to Keith Mallini, who was working at the Near North Side restaurant at the time. They regrouped, and the man returned to the table. Soon, the woman left the table to go to the bathroom. When she returned, there was dessert, champagne and rose petals.
