Fans, players, coaches, even beer vendors were relieved when the NFL finally agreed to a new contract with its referees. So now the officiating can stop being part of the story, right? Eh, maybe not. We'll always be talking about the calls on the field. Which gave us an excuse to "officiate" Monday night's Bears game at Dallas.   PREGAME Bad call: At 6:36 p.m. CDT, LeBron James tweets, "Less than a hour til GameTime!! #CowboyNation. " Chicago fans already dislike you, dude.

Perhaps the most impressive thing about Danica Patrick's history-making win of the pole at the Daytona 500 is she did so while dealing with a new high-profile romance. Before Sunday's qualifying race, most headlines about the 30-year-old Roscoe, Ill. native revolved around her relationship with new boyfriend, fellow NASCAR driver Ricky Stenhouse Jr. If Patrick takes the checkered flag at Daytona, she'll be on the short list of athletes who have succeeded while in a much-buzzed-about coupling.

I guess that Tim Tebow thing didn't work out. A week after rumors of a Tiger Woods-Tebow pairing at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am surfaced, espn.com reported Monday that Woods instead will be paired with Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo. Sounds like a perfect match if you ask us. Here's why.   MINI-COMEBACK TONY ROMO: Had perhaps his best season since 2007 with 31 touchdowns and just 10 interceptions. TIGER WOODS: Won his first tourney in two years in December.

Here's the situation. You are a Dallas Cowboys cheerleader. (You're not, but just go with it.) Your boyfriend is a Buffalo Bills wide receiver. The two teams are playing each other Sunday. Whom do you cheer for? Kelsi Reich, the Cowboys cheerleader in question, was faced with that dilemma Sunday. For her, though, it just might have been a win-win. Her team won easily. And her boyfriend, David Nelson, caught a touchdown pass for the Bills. Hip, hip, hooray.   Oh yes Tony Romo Dallas quarterback Romo wasn't impressed with Nelson's touchdown.

I've been playing fantasy football for longer than many RedEye readers have been alive, and there's been one constant in all that time: You build a great fantasy team with running backs. Not anymore. If you want to have a great fantasy team these days, you must have great receivers. The NFL is a passing league and with so many teams using running backs by committee, pass catchers like A.J. Green, Dez Bryant and Brandon Marshall are huge difference makers. Brandon Marshall, Bears I know Jay Cutler is out for an extended period, so you may think Marshall has...

So THAT'S what it looks like when Jay Cutler smiles. In fact, Monday's Bears win illustrated not just what his smiles look like but where they come from. For instance, when the offensive line gives Cutler time to throw, he smiles. And when best buddy Brandon Marshall gives him a jump ball target as large as Shaq in the post, he smiles. And when he flips a pass off his back foot to a sprinting Devin Hester for a touchdown, yes, the cantankerous quarterback is all smiles. Speaking of that beautiful touchdown, Hester smiles when he watches the replay and sees that he did...

The great experiment begins. Can the Bears, always known for middle linebackers and running backs, evolve into a modern NFL franchise? One with an offensive-minded head coach, talented QB and modern-thinking GM? Of course not. This is Chicago, and we just don't do this! That won't stop us from trying, so here are some boldless predictions to start the season. Week 1: Home against the Bengals. To seem more like a Bears coach, Marc Trestman changes his name to Mark Trestman.

Every year there are players I am smitten with before the season starts. This year is no exception. I really believe this agile quarterback, a rookie running back with a spin move like Denis Savard's and a wide receiver who can catch almost anything thrown his way are primed to for a huge fantasy season. Cam Newton, Carolina QB It was a tale of two halves for Newton in 2012. In the first first eight games, he had six passing touchdowns, four rushing scores and eight interceptions.

From Breaking Bad to breaking just plain awful. I want to take this opportunity to say goodbye to Charles Tillman personally. Something tells me the old vet will not be back with the Bears next year, even if he does return form his season-ending injury. That's the way it goes in the NFL, and it never ends pretty. But Peanut gave us some great, great memories. Interceptions and takeaways, one of the best lockdown corners ever. When it comes to Chicago, I can't keep track of the tweaks anymore.

Daaaaaaaa hope. Among the fond memories Chicago has of Mike Ditka--the mustache, the screaming, the cigars--near the top of the list is that in most of the games he coached or played, the Bears found a way to win when he played on or coached the team. Scoring every time you have the ball is a pretty cool bonus. The Bears busted up Dallas on Monday night at Soldier Field, pulling into a first-place tie with Detroit in the NFC North for the time being. (The Bears must finish one game ahead of the Lions to win the division.)
