When the Wachowski's (architects of The Matrix Trilogy ) set out to adapt David Mitchell 's brain-bending sci-fi novel CLOUD ATLAS for the big screen, I'm sure there were many who thought it couldn't be done. In fact, during one of the behind-the-scenes featurettes on the recent Blu-Ray/DVD release of the film, they admit to having their doubts at times. But after viewing the film in the comfort of my own home, with the leisure pace allowed by the home theater experience, I would attest that they succeeded in creating a film as complex and compelling as the book...

At the 48th Chicago International Film Festival (Oct. 11-25), the Centerpiece Film will be "Cloud Atlas," directed and written by native Chicagoans Lana and Andy Wachowski, the siblings who masterminded the "Matrix" trilogy, and and Tom Tykwer. "We are thrilled to welcome Lana and Andy Wachowski back to their beloved hometown," Michael Kutza, Founder and Artistic Director of the Chicago International Film Festival, said in a press release. "'Cloud Atlas' promises to be one of the most imaginative and dazzling movies of the year.

Watch the 6-minute “Cloud Atlas” trailer about 30 times and you'll have an idea of what it's like to sit through this epic disaster, which never bores but never rewards attention either. Pacing the nearly three-hour film as if it were a teaser for itself, Chicago-native writers/directors Andy and Lana Wachowski (“The Matrix”) and German filmmaker Tom Tykwer (“Run Lola Run”) don't deliver a single powerful sequence or profound moment.
