When Tremaine Atkinson and his partners open CH Distillery in the West Loop this summer, he knows some skeptics will turn up their noses at a vodka-focused distillery. While bourbon and gin have recently gained popularity, bartenders anecdotally acknowledge a bit of a vodka backlash. "I think they're missing out," Atkinson said of consumers who categorically ignore vodka. "I have nothing against the other spirits, but what's cool about vodka is that it gives you a way to really let very fresh ingredients shine.

Wouldn't it be cool to be able to charge your dying cellphone simply by putting it in your clutch purse? Liz Salcedo, 28, created Everpurse in River North because she never remembered to charge her phone and didn't like carrying extra batteries. The purse, available in fabric or leather, charges when placed on its charging mat. In just six days last fall, Everpurse reached the $100,000 goal of its Kickstarter campaign. She ended up raising $238,000 in a month. Even though the purse is in high demand - 2,000 orders were shipped this summer - Salcedo...

The Chicago Police Department sent out a community alert to residents of the 19th District, which encompasses Lakeview, warning of "numerous" catalytic converter thefts around the city this winter. Catalytic converters, which controls emissions in a car, are common targets of theft. When a car is missing its catalytic converter, the car will sound loud and "gravelly" when it starts, the police alert said, noting that theft usually takes place at night or early in the morning. Police officials advice Chicagoans to...

Keeper leagues are picking up steam in fantasy football, and I am a big fan of the concept. Here are three players you should consider hanging on to if you are in such a league, or consider drafting them in the early rounds next year. Alshon Jeffery, Bears wide receiver Jeffery is developing into a top-line wide receiver. After an injury-plagued rookie season, he's a big reason why the Bears have one of the best receiving corps in football. His stats are off the charts; two 200-yard receiving games, more than 1,100 receiving yards...

The CTA is having trouble with large gaps in its bus service, according to performance metrics released this week. From April through November, the agency did not meet its monthly target for the amount of time between two buses on a route, according to a November performance report. A CTA spokeswoman blamed the shortfall on the five-month southern Red Line overhaul that required multiple shuttle buses to ferry riders to the Green Line and other stops. "You get one traffic jam and it causes a ripple effect," CTA spokeswoman Tammy Chase said.

*** (out of four) In the disturbing and often very funny rant “God Bless America,” writer-director Bobcat Goldthwait turns his eye on a dimwitted society in which cast members of the reality show “Tuff Gurlz” hurl used tampons at each other. A horrible singer on “America's Superstarz” becomes an Internet sensation. People beat a homeless man and post it on YouTube. A commercial advertises a pig fart ringtone. And on and on. It's enough to drive a guy crazy.

Week 1 in the NFL is here, and for the first time in over a decade the Bears have more than a few viable fantasy regulars. Am I drinking Bears Kool-Aid? Yes, based on facts. The team has outstanding fantasy options, and that's without even mentioning the defense or Devin Hester. Look for these Bears to provide a huge lift all season. Jay Cutler Cutler was hampered by a thumb injury and offensive coordinator Mike Martz in 2011. But this year he is a top-tier fantasy QB. The positives: great arm, good awareness in the pocket, loves to throw to Brandon Marshall.
