Andy Whitfield, who starred in "Spartacus: Blood and Sand" on Starz, has died. The 37-year-old lost his battle with non-Hodgkin Lymphoma on Sunday, according to the Associated Press. His wife, Vashti, who was with him in Sydney, Australia, said in a statement that he was a "beautiful young warrior. " "No words to express the depth of such a loss," "Spartacus" co-creator Steven S. DeKnight wrote Sunday on Twitter. "You will be deeply missed, my brother. " Whitfield made a huge splash internationally in 2010 as the title character in Starz' violent and sexy series.

Like a gladiator fighting to the death, the series finale of "Spartacus: War of the Damned" will rip out your heart and stomp it into dust. That should not be a spoiler to anyone who knows the history of the rebel leader's war against Rome, which is what made writing the finale, titled "Victory" and airing at 8 p.m. Friday on Starz, such a difficult task for series creator Steven S. DeKnight. "Ending a series is always difficult. And I'm extremely proud of our series finale," DeKnight told me earlier this season.

In a recent episode of "Spartacus: Vengeance," the rebel leader's companion and confidante, Mira, felled a former ally with an arrow before she could run off with the rebel's loot. Katrina Law's aim wasn't as accurate when she first trained to use a bow. "I almost took out the entire stunt team when I was learning how to shoot the bow and arrow," she said, laughing. "I accidentally hit the concrete background and the arrow shot back 50 feet and everybody behind me had to dive out of the way. "It ricocheted back.

When Cynthia Addai-Robinson took over the role of the slave Naevia in "Spartacus: Vengeance," she wasn't sure how viewers would respond to her. A year later, she's kicking some serious butt in "Spartacus: War of the Damned," and fans are loving her. "I remember [creator Steven S. DeKnight] giving me just a vague idea that I would be eventually fighting and kicking ass," the London-born actress said in a recent call with reporters. "But I don't think I could have really imagined what I ultimately ended up doing, which was some of the hardest work I've ever done, really.

When I first met Andy Whitfield in 2010, the "Spartacus: Blood and Sand" star joked about creator Steven S. DeKnight's penchant for killing off lead characters on what he would help make a hit series for Starz. "Who knows, maybe I won't survive this season," he said. "And that would be OK, because Spartacus isn't just one man; it's a movement, the rebellion he launched. If he died, any one of his followers could carry on and say, 'I am Spartacus.'" Liam McIntyre will do just that when "Spartacus: Vengeance," the long-awaited second season, begins at 9 p.m. Jan. 27. The Aussie...

With the bloodbath that ended "Spartacus: Vengeance" a few weeks back, it's no surprise that the production would announce new cast members for the third season currently filmind in New Zealand. Kiwi actresses Anna Hutchison and Gwendoline Taylor, along with Aussie Jenna Lind, join the cast for the hit series, which will return to Starz early in 2013. According to a network release: Hutchison will play Laeta, the privileged wife of a Roman dignitary who becomes entangled in the struggle against Spartacus.

The upcoming third season of Starz' “Spartacus,” now titled “Spartacus: War of the Damned,” will be its last, the network announced Monday. The decision is surprising given how important the “Spartacus” franchise has been for Starz. It's easily the network's biggest success story, putting Starz on the map as a destination for original cable series. “War of the Damned,” currently in production in New Zealand, will debut in January 2013. The show's creator and executive producer, Steven S. DeKnight, said the decision was not reached lightly.

Like his character Gannicus in "Spartacus: Vengeance," Dustin Clare is a man of few words, at least if you're trying to get him to reveal much about his return to the series. "No, you're going to have to tune in Friday," the star of last year's prequel,"Spartacus: Gods of the Arena," told me during a conference call with journalists last week. He also rebuffed me with: "I just don't think I can [say]. I'm sorry, that's what I can give you. " "Go fishing in another pond.

Starz' epic "Spartacus" franchise goes into battle for its final season when "War of the Damned" begins Friday, an experience that has been bittersweet for series creator Steven S. DeKnight. "I'm sad to see it end," he told me recently. "On the other hand, I think it's such a good ending that if it's got to be sent off into the night, this was definitely the way to do it. I think we end on a high note. " "War of the Damned," which premieres at 8 p.m. CT Jan. 25, is the third proper season of the franchise that also included a prequel called "Gods of the Arena.

Todd Lasance was so intimidated about playing Julius Caesar in "Spartacus: War of the Damned," he nearly turned down the role. The Australian actor was having lunch with his parents when his agent called to say that he'd been hired to play the great Roman leader in the Starz series. "I nearly burst into tears because I was so excited," Lasance told me during a conference call with reporters. The image shows the rebel leader, played by Liam McIntyre, holding a broken and bloody Roman eagle standard in one hand and his sword in the other. Starz's "Spartacus" begins its final battle Jan. 25, the network announced Tuesday. "Spartacus: War of the Damned" ends the run of the network's hit franchise set in ancient Rome, after two full seasons and a shortened prequel season. "War of the Damned" picks up six months to a year after "Vengeance" ended. Spartacus (Liam McIntyre) and his rebels have amassed major victories against the Romans after defeating Roman commander Gaius Claudius Glaber at the Battle of Vesuvius. With his ranks reaching more than 30,000 fighters,...

Starz has released its first trailer for the David S. Goyer created historical drama "Da Vinci's Demons. " Goyer, who wrote "Batman Begins," "The Dark Knight" and "Man of Steel," takes great liberties with the history of artist and inventor Leonardo Da Vinci, but it looks like a great time. It should help relieve the sadness fans of the network's "Spartacus" may feel when that show ends its run next spring. "Da Vinci's Demons" will debut after "Spartacus" ends.
