New City and South Shore each saw three homicides in the last week, a RedEye analysis of preliminary police data found. In New City, a 5-year-old boy and 31-year-old woman were shot to death Friday in the 5300 block of South Winchester Avenue, police said. One day earlier, a 29-year-old man was stabbed to death in the 1000 block of West Garfield Boulevard, according to officials. In South Shore, a 24-year-old man was fatally shot Sunday in the 2400 block of East 75th Street, police said.

Morgan Park and South Shore each recorded a homicide in the last week, a RedEye analysis of preliminary police data found. In Morgan Park, a 48-year-old man was stabbed to death Sunday in the 11400 block of South Rockwell Street, police said. Morgan Park has logged one homicide so far this year. The Southwest Side community area recorded four homicides last year, according to RedEye data. In South Shore, a 26-year-old man was fatally shot Saturday in the 7800 block of South Muskegon Avenue, officials said.

During his attempted heist of a South Shore public school Tuesday morning, a burglar refueled with some milk he found in the school, county prosecutors said. Raheem Smith, 20, of the 700 block of East 84th Place in South Shore, was arrested just before 4 a.m. Tuesday morning after police officers responding to alarms at the South Shore Fine Arts Academy. Four Chicago community areas logged their second homicides of 2014 in the last week, a RedEye analysis of preliminary police data found. Each of the community areas--Austin, Englewood, South Shore and Woodlawn--saw their first homicide of the year in January, RedEye determined. In Englewood, a 69-year-old man was stabbed to death Friday in the 900 block of West 63rd Parkway, police said. Englewood logged 23 homicides last year, up from 21 homicides in 2012, according to RedEye data.

Chicago on Sunday recorded four homicides--the highest one-day total since January, a RedEye analysis of preliminary police data found. According to police: At 3:30 a.m., a 20-year-old man was shot to death in the 2800 block of East 76th Street in South Shore. Later that morning, an 82-year-old woman was found beaten to death in the 7800 block of Euclid Avenue in South Shore. At 4 p.m., a 21-year-old was fatally shot in the 6500 block of South Green Street in Englewood.

Chicago Lawn saw a double homicide last week, Chicago's first double homicide in three months, a RedEye analysis of preliminary police data found. Two men, ages 30 and 22, were discovered fatally shot in the 7100 block of South Oakley Avenue, police said. Chicago Lawn has logged three homicides so far this year. The Southwest Side community area recorded 22 homicides last year, RedEye determined. The last double homicide was Feb. 20, when two women were shot to death in a Chatham apartment, according to police data.
