The makers of "Strike Back" and Cinemax have cleared up one cliffhanger from the Season 1 finale: Sgt. Michael Stonebridge stays with the military unit called Section 20. Both Philip Winchester, who plays Stonebridge, and Sullivan Stapleton, who stars as Stonebridge's partner, Damien Scott, will be back for Season 2, Cinemax announced Thursday. The buff buddies make quite the dynamic duo as counter-espionage operatives carrying out covert missions all over the world. Also returning are Rhashan Stone as Major Oliver Sinclair and Michelle Lukes as Sgt. Julia Richmond.

"Strike Back" is the smartest action thriller on TV. As was the case in the series' first season on Cinemax (it began on British TV), British counter-terror unit Section 20 faces down a world of evil-doers, wasting more baddies in one episode than Jack Bauer did in an entire season of "24. " But "Strike Back" is much more than well-choreographed firefights and blood-chilling terrorist atrocities. Where it truly excels is in showing the emotional costs paid by the super soldiers doing their jobs and by the witnesses and/or victims of all the mayhem.

In the most recent episode of Cinemax's military adventure series "Strike Back," Section 20 soldiers Stonebridge and Scott advance on a militia that outnumbers them. And against the odds, they manage to send the militia scrambling. That's not an unusual scenario for the special operatives soldiers upon which Philip Winchester and Sullivan Stapleton base their characters, the actors have told me. We've talked about the extensive training they receive from the show's military advisers, but it goes far beyond how to handle weapons.

Things don't look good for Col. Philip Locke in the latest episode of "Strike Back. " The season's sixth episode, which I'm calling "Locked & Loaded," is so action-packed it almost feels like a season finale. Just check out the exclusive RedEye video clip above in which Stonebridge (Philip Winchester), Scott (Sullivan Stapleton) and Martinez (Milauna Jemai Jackson) confront Mairead McKenna (Catherine Walker) and her Irish terrorists in the streets a Budapest. What happens after the scene will blow your mind.

Philip Winchester's character, Sgt. Michael Stonebridge, has been wrestling some heavy demons in the new season of "Strike Back. " In the season premiere, he was forced to kill one of his Special Air Service trainees. The trainee's brother, former special forces soldier Craig Hanson, got his twisted vengeance by killing Stonebridge's wife. The murder pushed Stonebridge, as his Section 20 partner Sgt. Damian Scott (Sullivan Stapleton) said in the Aug. 31 episode, down a rabbit hole.

Director Michael Bassett loves to blow stuff up. That's why Cinemax's "Strike Back" was the perfect choice for his first TV directing gig. "I blow up an ambulance and it's one of the biggest indoor explosions I've ever seen," Bassett told me at San Diego Comic Con. "When the shockwave hits you - you're sitting at your monitors 50 yards or 100 yards away - and then suddenly you just feel this wallop of air. Your crew is like, '[gasping sound].'...

Philip Winchester and Amanda Mealing recognized the strange coincidence Thursday that they were doing press for their series "Strike Back" on the day Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi was killed. In the Cinemax action drama, they play members of a secret British military special force called Section 20 that just might sneak into a country to bolster an insurgency against an unfriendly government. "This is the voice of the people," Winchester suggested of the Libya news, "but you wonder if there have been little pockets of Special...
