Chicago on Friday recorded its 450th homicide of the year, a RedEye analysis of preliminary police data found. A 17-year-old boy was shot to death in the 2600 block of West 83rd Street in Ashburn, police said. Chicago has already surpassed last year's homicide toll of 444 killings. Chicago on Thursday logged its 100th homicide of the year, a RedEye analysis of preliminary police data found. A 23-year-old man was shot to death Thursday in the 300 block of East Kensington Avenue in West Pullman, the Tribune reported. For the last eight years, except for last year, Chicago has logged its 100th homicide of the year in April. Chicago reached this mark on March 20 last year. Homicides are down 39 percent year-to-date compared to the same period in 2012 and down 6 percent compared to 2011.

January ended Tuesday with 40 homicides in Chicago, up 43 percent from 28 homicides recorded in January 2011, a RedEye analysis of preliminary police data found. However, as of Wednesday afternoon, Chicago has not seen a homicide since Jan. 24, when a 39-year-old woman was shot to death in Washington Park. This is the first time RedEye's homicide tracker has not had a homicide to report on in the previous week since it was created three years ago. No homicides have been recorded so far in February.

Morgan Park and South Shore each recorded a homicide in the last week, a RedEye analysis of preliminary police data found. In Morgan Park, a 48-year-old man was stabbed to death Sunday in the 11400 block of South Rockwell Street, police said. Morgan Park has logged one homicide so far this year. The Southwest Side community area recorded four homicides last year, according to RedEye data. In South Shore, a 26-year-old man was fatally shot Saturday in the 7800 block of South Muskegon Avenue, officials said.

Austin saw its fourth homicide of the year on Saturday, a RedEye analysis of preliminary police data found. A 20-year-old man was shot to death in the 200 block of North Lorel Avenue, police said. The West Side community area logged 30 homicides last year, RedEye data shows. Citywide, gunshot homicides were recorded in the last week in North Lawndale, South Lawndale, West Englewood and West Town, according to RedEye data. Eight homicides have been logged so far this month, RedEye data found.

The Near West Side on Saturday recorded its seventh homicide of the year, a RedEye analysis of preliminary police data found. A 26-year-old man was shot to death in the 1300 block of West Washburne Avenue, police said. The community area, which includes the West Loop, University Village and the Illinois Medical District, recorded nine homicides in 2011, RedEye data shows. Citywide, gunshot homicides were logged in the last week in Austin, Chicago Lawn, Greater Grand Crossing, Morgan Park and South Shore, according to RedEye data.

New City on Saturday recorded its 21st homicide of the year, a RedEye analysis of preliminary police data found. A 27-year-old man was shot to death in the 4400 block of South Marshfield Avenue, police said. Fifteen homicides were logged in New City last year, RedEye data shows. Citywide, gunshot homicides were recorded in the last week in the community areas of Englewood, O'Hare, South Deering and South Shore, RedEye determined. Six homicides have been recorded so far this month.

Belmont Cragin on Saturday recorded its eighth homicide of the year, up from two homicides in 2011, a RedEye analysis of preliminary police data found. A 29-year-old man was shot to death Saturday in the 4900 block of West Diversey Avenue in the Northwest Side community area, police said. Citywide, gunshot homicides were recorded in the last week in Austin, Englewood, New City, South Deering and Washington Park, RedEye data found. In Avondale, a 39-year-old man was found strangled to death Tuesday in the 3100 block of North Central Park Avenue, police said.

Ashburn and Roseland each recorded a homicide in the last week, a RedEye analysis of preliminary police data found. In Roseland, a 72-year-old man was shot to death Saturday in the 9500 block of South Eberhart Avenue, police said. Roseland has logged two homicides so far this year. The South Side community area recorded 18 homicides last year, according to RedEye data. In Ashburn, a 20-year-old man was fatally shot Friday in the 7700 block of South Pulaski Road, police said.

February ended Thursday with 14 homicides, down from 29 homicides in February 2012, a RedEye analysis of preliminary police data found. Monthly homicide totals in the teens are extremely rare. The lowest monthly homicide total of the last 10 years was 16 homicides recorded in January 2005, according to reports posted on the Chicago Police Department's website. Seventeen homicides were logged in February 2006. Last month saw three periods of four days without a homicide. The last homicide Chicago logged in February was Sunday.
