The competition began in earnest last night on "Top Chef: Texas. " To keep things interesting this season, we're kicking off a point-based competition of our own for the six Chicago chefs in the cast. Challenge summary: In the opening quickfire challenge, the 16 cheftestants have one hour to cook rattlesnake, judged by Johnny Hernandez, chef/owner of La Gloria, who is known for cooking game at his Mexican street-food restaurant in San Antonio. The cast hits the road to Austin--with Heather and Beverly in separate cars, of course--and we learn some interesting things about the remaining chefs (Tylor had a Japanese nanny?). Quickfire challenge: Since Twitter grew in popularity at SXSW in Austin in 2007, the chefs must cook in accordance with "Top Chef" fans' real-time tweets announced by Padma and Tom during the challenge. Elimination challenge: Patti LaBelle guest judges and tasks the chefs with making a "tribute dinner" dish to honor their personal cooking inspiration.
