This Thursday brings my annual morning of being excited and nervous and telling myself I won't yell at the TV. And then doing it anyway. That's right, it's the Oscar nominations, for a change announced before the Golden Globes, not after.  Before Thursday's big announcements, allow me to make some predictions for the major categories. Note: I think it's boring to just go with all of the conventional, majority predictions. Better to be risky and wrong than safe and right, since on some level it's just a lot of group-think anyway.

It's the greatest tournament in the galaxy! No, not the NCAA, but the “ This Is Madness - Star Wars Character Tournament ” ! Last week Ben Finfer of The Game 87.7 and I gave our predictions for the opening round of the tourney that will decide who is the best character in the Star Wars Universe . Finfer went 14-2 in his picks, which Lord Vader would deem “Impressive. Most impressive.” On the other hand, I went 9-7 , and the Dark Lord had this reaction . Anyhoo, we have now reached the Sweet Sixteen!

Here's what they see happening against Detroit.   Brian Moore, @redeyesportsguy Bears 26, Detroit 17 The Bears are no longer who we thought they were. RedEye has a special video treat for you for the NCAA tournament. Chicago mind reader Mark Toland ( @MarkTolandLive ), who performs in the city and throughout the Midwest, came to us with an idea: After Selection Sunday, he would make predictions for the Final Four, seal them in an envelope, then see if he was right after the tournament had played out. We took him up on it, and above is the video proof. And lest you think that's where his talents end, we assure you that is not the case.

Each week before the Bears game, RedEye's sports crew gets to the point. Here's what they see happening at Denver.   Brian Moore, @redeyesportsguy Denver 21, Bears 10 I'm not gonna make a Tim Tebow joke. I'm not gonna make a Tim Tebow joke. You'll read and hear a lot of Super Bowl XLVI predictions this week, many from sources that don't cover football 51 weeks a year. "Kelly Ripa breaks down Brady versus Manning!" "Perez Hilton tells you why the G-Men will cover the spread!" You'll hit your saturation point right about … now. Forget the game for a moment. Imma predict what happens leading up to--and after--the Superb Owl. Tuesday: It's Media Day, so two things are certain: There will be a busty Latina reporter in a tube top asking inane questions in broken English and someone from"The Tonight...

Super Bowl Sunday is one of my favorite days of the year. There's football. There are celebrities. There are funny commercials. There's beer - uh, I mean, water. There's food. Ahhhh, the food. Among canines, Super Bowl Sunday is among the top table-scraps days of the year, right behind Thanksgiving and that day our humans trip over us after retrieving the pizza from the deliveryman. I didn't mean to be right under your feet, no sir. The real reason for Super Sunday, of course, is the NFL's title game.

As a dog, I can really relate to soccer, especially the parts where you run and can't use your hands. Speaking of which, let's see these guys eat every meal using only their teeth - then I'll be REALLY impressed. Anyway, I won't hold that against them in my Fire predictions for 2013. The team kicks off its MLS season Sunday at defending champion Los Angeles.   First celebrity sighting Snoop Dogg You know I love his canine nomenclature. Besides that, he's buddies with David Beckham, he's an official spokesman for "FIFA Soccer 13" and he considered...

The weather on Feb. 7, 1980 looked to be about as terrible as it is today, and of course Tom Skilling was there to give the forecast.  In honor of National Weatherperson's Day, we dug up an early forecast from WGN's Skilling, and he might as well be predicting the weather today. There are hand-drawn maps, a "major winter storm"hitting parts of the country and a head of hair on our beloved meterologist.  Quick Tom Skilling facts:  He began his broadcasting career in high school at age 14.  He's been at WGN since 1978.  He's under...

What WOULD you say? A new Facebook app developed by Princeton students in a 36-hour hackathon is making the rounds, and it's eerily accurate at copying how users talk on the social networking site. What Would I Say asks users to login using their Facebook, and using fancy terminology like bigram and unigram probabilities, trains a “bot” to mimic any given users way of speaking. Past comments and status messages are mashed up, and the results range from dead-on accurate to hilariously bizarre.

The Bears' Week 1 win gave fans a lot to feel optimistic about. But how can we expect the remaining games to go? Thanks to a free weekend of NFL Sunday Ticket, I watched part or all of every Week 1 game. I'm not saying you should wager your hard-earned money based on this info. But you COULD. Sunday vs. Minnesota: The Bears should put 12 players "in the box" to stop Adrian Peterson. Sign a guy made of antimatter for the secondary to balance the numbers. Christian Ponder will have four turnovers.

The ampersand strikes again in TNT's latest crime procedural, "King & Maxwell," but two names in the title doesn't always mean double the quality. Like the network's "Rizzoli & Isles" & "Franklin & Bash," the new series ( 9 p.m. CT June 10, TNT; 1.5 stars out of 4 ) will live and die on the casting - because everything else about it feels as stale and standard as week-old white bread. Thankfully, this one stars the always-likable Jon Tenney, most recently Fitz on "The Closer" and "Major Crimes," and the always-game Rebecca Romijn from "Ugly...

For the last couple weeks, Star Wars fans everywhere have been voting in the "This Is Madness: The Star Wars Character Tourney. " If you've been following along here at Geek To Me , special guest commentator - and fellow Star Wars geek - Ben Finfer of The Score 670 AM has been giving his predictions. I've also been giving my own, and to this point haven't missed a pick. Finfer's record is blemished only by a Clone Wars related match-up in the first round. I don't normally use my massive platform as a cultural and political force here at the 16 th highest trafficked blog at RedEye to stick it to individual companies. After all, in the pursuit of a reliable and profitable business, all companies make mistakes. New Coke, Starbury sneakers, the George Clooney Batman movie - bad products surface. Yet after ordering lackluster Chinese food with a friend the other night, I fear I cannot maintain silence on this one. No, it's not the lackluster Chinese food establishment that sparked my white-hot ire, but rather the fortune cookies included with the meal.
