* (out of four) Think about an animal you find cute. Now think about a computer-animated version of that animal rapping LL Cool J's “Mama Said Knock You Out.” Boom: Cuteness eliminated. Escalating the misguided, if-people-like-penguins-and-dancing-then-why-wouldn't-they-like-dancing-penguins logic of “Happy Feet” to new, triply irritating levels, “Happy Feet Two” takes forever to pick its central storyline. OK, the movie's about Emperor penguins synthesizing a variety of pop songs (“Rhythm Nation,” “Sexyback,” “Shake It Fast”)

Say hello to the Shedd's newest baby. The Shedd Aquarium announced Tuesday the birth of a healthy rockhopper penguin chick, which hatched on June 12, according to a press release. The Shedd says the chick has been introduced to the Polar Play Zone along with fellow rockhoppers, and is being nursed by its mother and father. According to the Shedd, the chick was born at 2.6 ounces, and has gained 1.4 ounces every day to a healthy weight of about 2 pounds. A spokesperson for the Shedd said a name has yet to be picked for the chick, mostly because gender cannot be determined until about a...

*** (out of four)   Foolproof movie idea: Paul Rudd stands in front of a mirror and improvises for 90 minutes. Admit it. You would see that movie. You would buy the DVD. You would watch it when you were feeling lousy, and it would cheer you up.   The minute or so of “Wanderlust” when George (Rudd) tries to give his reflection - with permission from his wife Linda (Jennifer Aniston), mind you - the confidence to sleep with a very beautiful, very interested woman (Malin Akerman)

When I was getting ready for my Chicago sports weekend in Pittsburgh, I made a list of famous Chicago things I might see there: deep dish pizza, potholes, athlete statues, etc. I should have added "disappointment" to the list. The Blackhawks fell to the Penguins 4-1 on Sunday at the Consol Energy Center. The next day, the Cubs fell to the Pirates 1-0 in 10 innings on Opening Day. There were many more Blackhawks fans in Pittsburgh than Cubs fans. I spotted these fans sightseeing at Point State Park and drinking at a...

*1/2 (out of four) Poor James Tupper. He played the hero's ex's new/inevitably doomed guy in “Mr. Popper's Penguins” and now again in “Playing For Keeps,” which is approximately the same movie. Just with hot soccer moms in place of penguins, I guess. This time, the absentee dad looking for redemption is George (Gerard Butler), a soccer star who apparently “got more ass than a toilet seat” back in the day. Though he's no longer competing with toilet seats, George now catches the eye of suspiciously attractive...

It's time for the other March of the Penguins. Many a Chicagoan has been there--when the mad dash for the evening bus turns into slapstick comedy as commuters slip, slide and fall on the neverending network of icy sidewalks this winter. Record cold snaps and the return of the polar vortex are bringing more ice to city streets, but that doesn't mean anyone should be busting ass if it can be avoided.    While we were shuffling around our carpeted office Wednesday afternoon, RedEye called on experts in walking on slick...

The 2013 Blackhawks have long since left the 2006-07 Anaheim Ducks in their dust, but oh, there are mountains left to climb. Chicago's streak of games with at least a point reached 22 this season and sits at 28 overall if you count last season. It's time to see how they stack up against some of the greatest winning/unbeaten regular-season streaks in history.   NHL 1979-80 Philadelphia Flyers: 35 games The "Broad Street Bullies" own the pinnacle of unbeaten streaks in hockey; it's also the longest in major American sports.

It's been a long time since we've had a chance to write about a Bulls-Blackhawks double-bill in the pages of RedEye. Too long. The NBA lockout robbed Chicago of many doubleheaders this fall, but that's about to change real fast. The condensed, 66-game NBA season means the Bulls will be playing four to five times a week, while the Blackhawks will see their usual three to four games a week. Now'd be a good time to invest in a TV with picture-in-picture technology or, heck, just another TV altogether.

Where a normal person might see random fabric hanging from the ceiling when going through a car wash, Shedd Aquarium staff members see the makings of a sea otter habitat. Recycled bottles become jellyfish. PVC? Twigs for penguins nest. Turning the ordinary into the extraordinary is all in a day's work for the four members of the Shedd's fab shop, the place where they create the display pieces that the 2 million plus who flock to the Shedd each year will see inside the exhibits. “We take artificial materials and make them look very real, as much as we can,” said Kristen Neria, assistant...
