It's the holiday season once again, and what kind of self-centered goon would I be if I didn't get you fine folks the gift of a rapid-fire touch-em-all column? (Note, after this year we'll have to change that phrase.) > > Firing time and the lying's sleazy: From UCLA coach Rick Neuheisel getting canned a full week before the first Pac-12 championship game (and still coaching it) to the complete farce of the Urban Meyer saga, it's that time of year where college football teams eliminate their coaches and bring in a set of fresh faces.

Now that Notre Dame is a national title contender, everyone in Chicago has to pretend it's a "Chicago team" although it's 100 miles away and half of us assume South Bend is south of the city, not east. Notre Dame football elicits two distinct responses from sports fans: You love 'em for their tradition or you hate 'em for their stupid gold helmets that have actual 23.9-karat gold. The next few weeks will provide plenty of entertainment for both camps. Because USC starting quarterback Matt Barkley is out for this weekend's game, the Irish need only to make sure their buses take the northbound...

The good times keep rolling this week as the college football slate is locked and loaded. > > There are several enticing matchups, including a showdown between 24th-ranked Auburn and Johnny Football's seventh-ranked Texas A&M team. The Aggies defense has been porous, so look for Manziel to again carry this team on his shoulders. > > Wisconsin is back in the polls at No. 25 thanks to a drubbing of Northwestern. They take on an Illinois squad still licking its wounds after what Nebraska did to the Illini.
