Northwestern University is on its way to the 2013 Gator Bowl - and the Wildcats are showing their excitement for the big game by joining in on the meme craze, accepting Wildcat-themed submissions through Facebook and Twitter. "Chicago P.D. " star LaRoyce Hawkins counts himself lucky to be working full time on a TV series without moving away from Chicago. Several Chicago universities will honor Transgender Day of Remembrance this year by hosting vigils and other events for Transgender Awareness Week, which kicked off Monday. The day of remembrance was first held in San Francisco in 1999 to remember Rita Hester, a 34-year-old African-American transgender woman who was found stabbed to death in her near-Boston home on Nov. 28, 1998. Northwestern University shined in the national spotlight last week thanks to the Wildcats historical encounter with Ohio State on the football field last Saturday. The result is not what the Wildcats faithful wanted (a 40-30 loss), but there were plenty of good things that came out of it. Moral victories, if you will. > > The ratings. The university and the program have reached a new level of recognition. The Ohio State game scored a 2.2 rating, and more than 6 million viewers.

An 800-seat ballroom and a two-story sports bar are just two of the additions future students at Northwestern University can hope to see under a new student center concept design that was presented to the university's Associated Student Government last week. Mayor Rahm Emanuel is going back to school this week--to his alma mater Northwestern University, where he received a master's degree in speech and communications in 1985. Northwestern University has already raised $55 million, more than a quarter of its $220 million goal, to build a brand new athletic complex on the north end of its main Evanston campus. University President Morton Schapiro and Vice President for Athletics and Recreation Jim Phillips made the fundraising announcement Sunday, two days before Northwestern's football team beat Mississippi in the Gator Bowl on New Year's Day. The win was the university's first bowl victory in 64 years.

When the lines to ice skate at Millennium Park are too long, wouldn't it be nice to have your own ice skating rink in your backyard? Northwestern University students are lucky enough to have something like that.  Construction on the ice rink at the Norris student center started last week. In 2012, Northwestern University junior Alex Nee was appearing in a college mainstage production of "Rent" and thinking about life after graduation. Good news, incoming college freshman at Northwestern University: the stressful, exhausting process of moving into dorms just got a lot easier, thanks to brand-new student-run company RezEssentials. Instead of picking up important items like a mini-fridge or a futon from the store and schlepping it to school along with thousands of other students on move-in day, students now can pre-order their dorm items online from RezEssentials, and the company will deliver them to the dorms before they get to campus.

Northwestern University junior Daniel Donohue may or may not have won $100,000 in the "Jeopardy!" College Championship.
