Nikki Lynette is a Chicago musician and ChicagoNow blogger. Here is an excerpt of a column she posted Wednesday . I remember my mom using makeup to cover up bruises my father had inflicted on her while drunk and/or high. I remember her pretending as if everything was fine at family events. I remember the arguments that almost always led to fights, and in spite of having lived through that hell the night before, my mom still woke us up on time, got us washed, dressed, fed, and off to school every day. The years of drama that my mom dealt with as my dad's wife gave way to years of drama...

Dear Private First Class Vincent H. Williams: I remember your first fight like it was yesterday. A mean blond kid hit you for no reason. You were small for your age. You just stood there, looking shocked. In that moment, I realized that because there was no man in our lives to teach you how to fight, as your big sister, I had to do it. So I grabbed that kid and I said, "Hit him back. " I was only slightly bigger than him thanks to an early growth spurt, and you stood there looking uncertain while the kid squirmed in my grasp.

If you Google my name, you will not see a list of articles I wrote for my college newspaper, my name on the high school honor roll or even my LinkedIn page. If you Google "Niki Fritz," you will get listings for Nikki Fritz, a surgically altered, B-list '90s porn actress. And, yes, I actually have had to tell people, "No, sorry, that is not me in the 'Nikki Fritz Making Love So Hard' video. " That is the thing about Google. It leaves you with more questions instead of the concrete answers you were searching for - and it's especially dangerous when you're dating.

* (out of four) I'm not going to mince words here. Madonna's 13th studio album sounds like exactly what it is: a 53-year-old woman clinging to the last shreds of a culture that has passed her by, came back and passed her by again. Unlike her last “comeback” album “Confessions of a Dance Floor,” this release lacks any sort of gravity, purpose or even catchy singles. However, if you look at the record as a solid “hit all current pop music trends” bingo card," it actually becomes pretty impressive.

Do you really need an excuse to hop in the shower with someone? Fine, AXE will give you one: water conservation. If you “showerpool,” you'll use less water. AXE, a brand of grooming products including shower gel, is doing a “showerpooling” water conservation campaign with a video narrated by “Twilight's” Nikki Reed and stops at 10 college campuses, including a visit to Northwestern University planned for Oct. 17. The campaign centers around a pledge at Facebook.com/axe to install water-efficient showerheads (which AXE will give out to college students for free)
