"Chi-raq" is a loaded word, isn't it? The term, made popular by the Chicago rap scene in 2012 (but most likely hit mainstream consciousness in Kanye West's "Black Skinhead") and the name of Nicki Minaj's newest track, is a byproduct of the nation's obsession with Chicago's ridiculously high number of homicides. The term generally produces two reactions: disgust and pride. Outsiders - Chicagoans who don't experience the almost routine murders - are disgusted. They are aghast at exposing this music to the rest of the country.

*** (out of four) No, Nicki Minaj still hasn't made an album that consistently brandishes her best asset. (Not that one, dude.) I'm fine with that. Of course, it would be great if Minaj uncorked the jaw-dropping skills flashed in guest spots on Kanye West's “Monster” for an entire record. In its most exhilarating moments, her flow sounds like a rap roller coaster with a mad scientist running the controls. Still, “Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded” lands closer to the center of the target than its predecessor, “Pink Friday.” As if wanting to make sure people...

Last night on New York radio station Hot 97, Big Sean debuted a new song  featuring Kendrick Lamar and Jay Electronica that was cut from his upcoming album "Hall Of Fame. " Other than the usual 80-pound bench press boasts (That would be Sean) and uninteresting new bars from the rap equivalent of your cousin who was a starting linebacker for Michigan who quit and then took a few years to "find himself" after college (That would be Electronica.), it wasn't a big deal.  Oh crap, I forgot about Kendrick!

"American Idol" is back -- again! The series that launched a thousand Sanjayas kicks off its 11th season at 7 p.m. Wednesday, and in order to keep us interested, they've brought in the battle of Mariah Carey vs. Nicki Minaj. Normally, we're not huge fans of buying into ridiculous fights that are staged for television, but we really can't contain our glee when one star (Mariah) hires extra security to fend off the other (Nicki). Ahead of the catfights that surely will ensue Wednesday, we faced off these two divas to see whose claws are sharpest.

It's been a long, long time since the Grammys had an official host -- seven years, to be exact. So there's a lot of pressure to pick a cool, cool MC -- LL Cool J, also to be exact. He'll be leading the night for performers such as Kelly Clarkson, Foo Fighters and Nicki Minaj. But how cool has LL remained in the past seven years? We took a look at his highs and lows to find out. damoran@tribune.com | @redeyedana 2005 1.5 -- He was on "House"! And in some Ray Liotta movie called "Slow Burn"!

Potential patrons in search of stars at the Adler Planetarium have been out of luck for the last couple days, as the "American Idol" entourage took over the museum in search of their own kind of star. The show has previously discovered finalists like Jennifer Hudson and Crystal Bowersox in Chicago, and based on judges' comments at a Wednesday press conference, the group likes its chances to find another phenom from the city. Randy Jackson, Nicki Minaj, Mariah Carey, Keith Urban and Ryan Seacrest were all on hand for the conference, sitting...

If someone would have walked up to Jay-Z on the day he started his rap career and said, "One day, the president of the United States will introduce you at your own music festival," I am sure Young Hov would not have believed it. Yet nobody seemed to find this surprise unusual when it happened in Philadelphia during Labor Day weekend. Well, except the angry folks who vented online about President Obama "hanging out with an ex-drug dealer. " Those folks seem to have forgotten that George H.W. Bush once invited the "original gangster," Eazy-E, to the...

First, shouts out to 2 Chainz's street team, who seemed to really embrace their roles as the first point of contact for Monday's Nicki Minaj show at the Chicago Theatre. Outfitted with giant posters advertising 2 Chainz's upcoming album (“Out 8.14.12”) and at least one life-size cutout of the Atlanta rapper, they posed for fan pictures with said cutout and chatted up a few nervous parents who had dropped off groups of high schoolers. They watched over the amazing (and relatively gender neutral)

This week: Whether you're seeing Kanye West or Wilco (pictured) or Nicki Minaj or Bon Iver, chances are people at the concert are singing along. The question: Is that fun or annoying? Fun The guy thrashing so hard that he creates a beer waterfall. The chick who paid $40 to yell a conversation with friends that she could've had in a bar. These are the people who need to be booted from concerts - not grinning, bopping fans who are so thrilled to be there they can't help but join in with the band.
