Keep your eyes on Tom Hardy. Before the Brit starred in films like "Inception" or this year's "Warrior," he scorched the small screen as thuggish Freddie Jackson in the 2009 British miniseries "The Take" ( 8 p.m. Friday, Encore; 3.5 stars ). His unblinking, brutish presence has turned a rather traditional and ultra-violent crime drama into something exceedingly watchable and suspenseful. Encore is presenting the miniseries as an original for the network, premiering each of the four parts at 8 p.m. Dec. 2, 9, 16 and 23. As the story opens, thuggish Freddie is picked up...

Although you've tasted many of the ingredients before (in "The Sopranos," "Mad Men," "The Godfather" movies), creator Mitch Glazer mixes in enough new elements to keep things tasty. Throw in the exquisite sets, period cars, gorgeous costumes and generally fine acting, and "Magic City" ( 9 p.m. April 6, Starz; 3 stars )

At the end of the premiere of "The Mob Doctor" ( 8 p.m. Sept. 17, Fox; 2 stars out of 4 ), the title character is offered a free pass on a mob debt, but she must leave her hometown of Chicago to earn it. If only Dr. Grace Devlin (Jordana Spiro) would take the pass.
