"Justified" creator Graham Yost was in a terrible pickle when it came time to work on Season 3 of his critically acclaimed series: What do you do when you've killed off one the greatest baddies ever? You find not one, but two major villains to trouble the ever-so-cool U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant). Oh, make that three; Raylan's nemesis/friend Boyd Crowder (Walton Goggins) hasn't left the Kentucy backwoods. Boyd is making a play for the Harlan County marijuana trade that was once run by Mags Bennett (Emmy-winner Margo Martindale)

Deputy U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant) has no shortage of old and new adversaries. At the end of this week's episode, "Harlan Roulette," Raylan's pursuit of Wynn Duffy (Jere Burns) brought him face-to-face for the first time with his real nemesis, Detroit mob "star" Robert Quarles (Neal McDonough). The episode ended perfectly with Raylan snapping Quarles' photo and giving him a look that said, A. "You're strange," and B. "Should I be worried about you?" In "The Devil You Know," Raylan's got some old enemies on his mind.

Like the entire fourth season, the latest episode "Justified" was smart, funny and nerve-wracking. It was also kind of sweet thanks to the return of Natalie Zea. She hasn't been a regular on the show--she's working on Fox's "The Following"--but the networks and productions worked things out so she could reprise her role as Winona Hawkins, ex-wife of Deputy U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant). "The fact that I'm able to do both of these [shows] has been just beyond cool," she told me recently, "because it doesn't happen like that often.

Deputy U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens doesn't shy away from killing people in FX's "Justified," but does it ever bother him? "The answer is I have no idea," Timothy Olyphant, who plays Raylan, told me during a conference call Friday. "I just know that he does kill folks and he seems to be getting along nicely. " Olyphant later added that the reason he can't answer the question is because characters like Raylan "don't talk about shit that much. " "I can speculate, but who really cares?"

I've never liked doing year-end best-of lists for a number of reasons. I don't feel qualified, for one. As a part-time critic I don't see or even sample every show. I also find that I enjoy shows that definitely aren't "the best" technically, but are so fun and entertaining, like Fox's silly "Sleepy Hollow," that they have me coming back week after week. If a show brings so much joy to one making a list, doesn't it deserve to be on said list? Anyway, the powers that be at RedEye tell me people love lists, and shut up and make yours.

Walton Goggins would never say the relationship between his "Justified" character, Boyd Crowder, and Timothy Olyphant's U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens fuels the hit FX series. "That's an interesting question," he told me last week. "That would be real tough for me to answer and to do it with humility because ... I wouldn't want to come off as arrogant by pretending to know the answer to that question. "But I certainly hope so. I think you have these two men who are very similar, yet they're very, very different and at the end of the day people enjoy when they meet.

Natalie Zea says she prefers doing comedies, but her characters in two high-profile dramas find themselves in peril this week. "Oh, God, I know. I gotta get away from this," she said Friday with a chuckle. "I've got to go do some sort of slapstick comedy!" The laughs will have to wait, at least on the small screen. In Fox's "The Following," she plays Claire Matthews, the former wife of serial killer and cult creator Joe Carroll (James Purefoy) and former lover of the man who put him away, FBI agent Ryan Hardy (Kevin Bacon)
