Maggie Daley passed away on Thanksgiving Day. She had been the woman behind former Mayor Richard M. Daley during his 22 years in office. As sitting Mayor Emanuel said, "While Mayor Daley served as head of the city, Maggie was its heart. " The soft, caring core to a powerful machine. We could learn a lot from Maggie Daley. The position of first lady is not something that we the people vote for, but she's just as important as the official second-in-command. She's the woman who's there when times are rough and stresses are high.

The Chicago Park District board of commissioners on Wednesday will consider awarding a $42.5 million contract to Walsh Construction Company for the second phase of the Maggie Daley Park. The 20-acre park, which encompasses the Daley Bicentennial Plaza, Cancer Survivors Garden and Peanut Park, sits over the underground parking garage at North Grant Park bordered by Randolph Street and Lake Shore, Columbus and Monroe drives. The first phase included repairing the roof of the garage and replacing the waterproofing system.

The cold weather means one thing: time to bundle up. Slip on the gloves, wrap your scarf and lace up the skates. Ice skating season is upon us. The McCormick Tribune Ice Rink at Millennium Park is set to open Friday and remains open through mid-March. The other rinks in the city operated by the Chicago Park District are planned to be open from Nov. 23 through Feb. 24. Of course, that all depends on the weather. Last year, mild November temperatures delayed the opening of nine outdoor rinks.

It's almost time to grab your hat, mittens and skates for the winter tradition of ice skating in Chicago. This Friday, weather permitting, the McCormick Tribune Ice Rink in Millennium Park is set open to the public. It'll be open through March 9. Admission is free. Skates can be rented for $10. There will be free ice skating lessons for beginners on the weekend one hour before the rink opens. Hours are noon to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, noon to 10 p.m. on Friday, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 9 p.m....
