Andrew Barber of FakeShoreDrive.com has been documenting Chicago rap at great length for years. I recently sat down with my friend Barber for a casual conversation about Barber's thoughts on "The College Dropout" and its impact on the city and hip-hop scene.   "I'd already been a huge fan of Kanye's production since Jay Z's "The Blueprint," and "Izzo" remains one of my favorite Jay songs to date. I remember the MTV News brief in '02, '03 about Kanye pursuing a solo rap career, and it was on my radar from that day forward.

Kanye West debuted a new song "God Level" via a commercial that aired Saturday during the UEFA Champions League final.  The commercial - and new song - kicked off Adidas' "The Dream: All In Or Nothing" Wolrd Cup ad campaign. Now that Kanye West is #TeamAdidas (He signed a sponsorship deal with the brand after leaving Nike at the end of 2013.), we've been wondering when we were going to see his first collab with the brand. Turns out, it's a new song produced by West and Hudson Mohawke (TNGHT)

It's here! The biggest concert to hit Chicago since, well, the last time Jay-Z was in town rocked the United Center on Wednesday (with another to come Thursday!). Because moments like these are rare - how often do we get to watch the world's two greatest rappers share a stage? - I've documented the the show for your reading pleasure. 7:20 p.m. The dress code tonight is "dress to impress or don't even try. " A surprising number of women have accepted the "look as classy as you can wearing super-high heels and lingerie" challenge--and there aren't many complaints from...

If you're any kind of hip hop fan and want to get seriously lost down a rabbit hole, I recommend Matt Daniels' interactive chart, "The Largest Vocabulary in Hip-Hop. " Daniels compiled thousands of data sets on the unique words used by hip hop artists, Shakespeare and Herman Melville in "Moby Dick. " It turns out Shakespeare can't hold a candle to Outkast, and Melville can't quite compete with GZA or Aesop Rock. After taking a class on "Moby Dick" with Pulitzer-winning author Marilynne Robinson, my one regret is that I did not bring this up on the last day of class.

Hip-hop and food are not strangers to each other--in fact the opulence and eccentricities of rap music has often lended itself well to cuisine. From Common's classic single, "The Food," to Kanye's classic snark, "What she order?/Fish filet," Chicago rappers have shown a penchant for both the gourmet and the grimy, and, of course, we now have a Tumblr to bring some of it together. This Here's Overrated, But I Love Your City, Baby is a new Tumblr that calls itself "A Rap Video-Based Guide to Eating in Chicago.

During Jay Z's "Magna Carta Holy Grail" tour, he's been lending valuable stage time to a random concert-goer to spit his or her stuff for the audience. Thursday night at the United Center, the rapper in question was 19-year-old Monique "Mobo" Burrell of Kankakee. Her charismatic freestyle was captured and passed around social media -- watch the video, here -- garnering largely positive response and getting the attention of the Jiggaman himself. RedEye tracked her down, and the story of how she got that moment to...

"Never think that I'm not from Chicago for one second. " In the six months since Kanye West released his sixth album, "Yeezus," he has, of course, said a lot. Yet the above affirmation, said rather pointedly to Jimmy Kimmel in October , stands out among all of the rapper's other quotables. Why? Because a growing movement of locals have shunned the Chicago-raised icon, and the question remains: Is Kanye still a Chicagoan till' Chicago ends? Some would argue no -- he doesn't possess a full-time residence here, rarely comes to town and flaunts an...

***1/2 (out of four)   When was the last time you saw Kanye West smile? He was once a schoolyard dick-joke rapper; now he's “all black everything,” every day, constantly dressed for a funeral and fighting the paparazzi with Kim Kardashian on his arm. In a recent New York Times interview, he said, “Maybe 90 percent of the time it looks like I'm not having a good time.”   On 90 percent of “Yeezus,” Kanye's sixth studio album,...

Jay-Z and Kanye aren't the sort of guys that back down from a challenge. Which is why we didn't ask for their opinion when facing them off. ALBUMS Jay-Z: His platinum-selling 1996 debut "Reasonable Doubt" quickly established him as an artist to watch and you'd struggle to find a hip-hop fan who doesn't consider "The Blueprint" a classic. Several recent records, however, (including "Kingdom Come" and "The Blueprint 3") generated far less universal acclaim. Kanye (winner)

The Internet is a wonderful thing.  Today's proof: a random photo, posted to Reddit , of Yeezus himself in a zip-line business office in Mexico. Why is it special? Because it depicts an extremely sad -- or maybe just pooped -- picture of Kanye West sitting in the background as his wife Kim Kardashian poses with another man. Kim, at least, looks like she's having a great time.  There's little more context than that, other than the Reddit user who posted it says he doubts it's ever made it's way online, and the photo's timestamp says it was taken Dec. 10, 2013.  It's only a...

Based on the concert footage-heavy trailer Kanye West previously released for his "Yeezus" movie, it seemed like a poster for the film would be a photo of, you know, Kanye. There would be no reason to think he'd have a problem with that. Apparently not. Today on Instagram Mazdack Rassi of Milk Studios released the first poster for "Yeezus" (seen above), which, as you can see, has a few spots of blood and nothing more. West joined Seth Meyers on his second night at the desk and gave a fairly entertaining interview, touching on topics ranging to the mask he wears during his "Yeezus" shows, fatherhood, Quentin Tarantino, a weird point about nudity on European TV and an old SNL sketch in which Kanye crashes the awards presentation at a weird place. After our oral history went live earlier in the week, Complex debuted some never before seen video clip from Coodie Simmons from the studio sessions during the recording of the "College Dropout. Let's not beat around the bush here. Look at the below photo ( posted to Reddit ) and tell me that woman's knee doesn't look like Kanye West.     Holy freaking shit, people.  I heard a lady over in the Wild 100's saw him in a snow drift I heard a dude down in Harvey saw him in a gyro burger. Yeezus (Kneezus?) walks among us.  Want more? Discuss this article and others on RedEye's Facebook page .
