Hip-hop and food are not strangers to each other--in fact the opulence and eccentricities of rap music has often lended itself well to cuisine. From Common's classic single, "The Food," to Kanye's classic snark, "What she order?/Fish filet," Chicago rappers have shown a penchant for both the gourmet and the grimy, and, of course, we now have a Tumblr to bring some of it together. This Here's Overrated, But I Love Your City, Baby is a new Tumblr that calls itself "A Rap Video-Based Guide to Eating in Chicago.

During Jay Z's "Magna Carta Holy Grail" tour, he's been lending valuable stage time to a random concert-goer to spit his or her stuff for the audience. Thursday night at the United Center, the rapper in question was 19-year-old Monique "Mobo" Burrell of Kankakee. Her charismatic freestyle was captured and passed around social media -- watch the video, here -- garnering largely positive response and getting the attention of the Jiggaman himself. RedEye tracked her down, and the story of how she got that moment to...

If you're any kind of hip hop fan and want to get seriously lost down a rabbit hole, I recommend Matt Daniels' interactive chart, "The Largest Vocabulary in Hip-Hop. " Daniels compiled thousands of data sets on the unique words used by hip hop artists, Shakespeare and Herman Melville in "Moby Dick. " It turns out Shakespeare can't hold a candle to Outkast, and Melville can't quite compete with GZA or Aesop Rock. After taking a class on "Moby Dick" with Pulitzer-winning author Marilynne Robinson, my one regret is that I did not bring this up on...

"Never think that I'm not from Chicago for one second. " In the six months since Kanye West released his sixth album, "Yeezus," he has, of course, said a lot. Yet the above affirmation, said rather pointedly to Jimmy Kimmel in October , stands out among all of the rapper's other quotables. Why? Because a growing movement of locals have shunned the Chicago-raised icon, and the question remains: Is Kanye still a Chicagoan till' Chicago ends? Some would argue no -- he doesn't possess a full-time residence here, rarely comes to town and flaunts an...

***1/2 (out of four) When was the last time you saw Kanye West smile? He was once a schoolyard dick-joke rapper; now he's “all black everything,” every day, constantly dressed for a funeral and fighting the paparazzi with Kim Kardashian on his arm. In a recent New York Times interview, he said, “Maybe 90 percent of the time it looks like I'm not having a good time.” On 90 percent of “Yeezus,” Kanye's sixth studio album,...

Jay-Z and Kanye aren't the sort of guys that back down from a challenge. Which is why we didn't ask for their opinion when facing them off. ALBUMS Jay-Z: His platinum-selling 1996 debut "Reasonable Doubt" quickly established him as an artist to watch and you'd struggle to find a hip-hop fan who doesn't consider "The Blueprint" a classic. Several recent records, however, (including "Kingdom Come" and "The Blueprint 3") generated far less universal acclaim. Kanye (winner)
