***1/2 (out of four) “Killing Them Softly,” writer-director Andrew Dominik's follow-up to 2007's vastly under-seen “The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford,” does include traditional criminal elements. But if the movie's a used car, its parts are in great shape. That's because even as Dominik filters the film through Scorsese and Tarantino, the crooks in “Killing Them Softly” have a special brand of jittery desperation. Frankie (Scoot McNairy of “Argo”)

***1/2 (out of four) Horrendous dialogue like "Leave your stupid comments in your pocket. " Awkward casting sessions that make people auditioning think they're about to be murdered. A filmmaker who shoots on an indoor set of a roof instead of an actual roof. Obviously, I'm talking about "The Room. " "The Disaster Artist," co-written by "The Room" co-star Greg Sestero, provides an extraordinarily entertaining inside look at his unusual friendship with star/writer/director/producer Tommy Wiseau, leading to Sestero's involvement in the 2003 film many now consider...

Stroll into Johnny's IceHouse West at 2550 W. Madison St. and you'll see a typical hockey facility. It is home to recreational leagues. It has a bulletin board updating visitors on upcoming camps, skill seminars and pickup games. It sells hockey gear and has a skate-sharpening service. It is also free to the public, which is cool if you're a hockey fan who wants to watch one of the aforementioned leagues. Or if you want to watch the Blackhawks. They practice there too. "I gotta see them skate in person," Brett Cozzi said at a practice in April.

Jay Cutler spoke about a wide range of topics Wednesday, but what did his words really mean? Let's translate them. ABOUT REHAB, JAY SAID … "It could be I'm done for the season. I just have to be smart about it and realize that there is a long-term picture here. " WHAT IT MEANS "Yeah, I'm totally done. Toast. Stick a fork in me. Even if we make it to the Super Bowl, I'm Audi 5000. "   ABOUT HIS RETURN, JAY SAID ... "I don't want to put a real number on it because I just don't know.

Perhaps lost in the shuffle of the Bears' offseason moves was their decision to part ways with Johnny Knox, and his immediate retirement.  Here was a receiver entering the prime of his career, at age 26, on a team that could use all the reliable targets it could get for Jay Cutler. So why did Knox call it quits? I can empathize because I was in a similar situation in 1997. Like Knox, I underwent spinal fusion surgery. This procedure uses titanium to stabilize and repair damage to the neck, back and spine areas.

It's never too early to start thinking about the NFL playoffs. In fact, now is the perfect time to start thinking about the NFL playoffs. With struggling San Diego in town to face the Bears and just six games remaining after this week, Sunday's matchup at Soldier Field was what you might call a huge game. By the time the Bears took the field, NFC North rival Detroit had already won to move a game ahead of the Bears. The Chargers had lost four straight games and had watched as two AFC West teams won before kickoff.

What does it take to make a good man do something evil? Matthew Rhys (of the upcoming FX drama "The Americans") stars as two nearly identical strangers who find out the answer in "The Scapegoat" ( 7 p.m. CT Jan. 22, Ovation; 2.5 stars out of 4 ). It's 1952 and John Standing plans to get away from it all after being fired from the prep school where he taught Greek. He's drowning his sorrows in a British pub when he runs into his mirror image, Johnny Spence, a conniving man of privilege who wants to escape his responsibilities as well, but for...
