*** (out of 4) During the middle of Jay-Z's verse on "3 Kings" last year, he had a bar where he just sneered, sniffed, sniveled. That's all it was: "King H-O, y'all should know by now/ and if you don't, uh-- *sniff*. " It was the best part of the song, and today's "Open Letter" embodies that line, only in an entire song. It's both a direct response to the recent controversies surrounding Hov (the illegal-but-actually-legal vacation to Cuba, people clowning on his share of the Nets, his friendship with Obama)

The juiciest celebrity gossip machine of 2014 just keeps getting juicier. Following the release Monday of security camera footage that allegedly shows Solange Knowles attacking brother-in-law Jay Z in an elevator, Jay and wife Beyonce appeared courtside at a Brooklyn Nets game. The New York Daily News is reporting that Solange blew up after Jay decided to ditch Beyonce to attend Rihanna's Met Ball after-party. Yeah, we'd be pissed too. Since all parties are keeping their lips tightly zipped, we can only speculate about what went down here.

I have never seen someone like Jay-Z before. My guess is, neither have you. We've reached an unprecedented level with Mr. Carter. Jay undeniably has conquered the following areas: rap music, pop music, outshining artists on songs he's featured on, discovering new acts, concept albums, that whole "power couple" thing ... you get the idea. So why are respected critics such as Marlow Stern of The Daily Beast and Chris Richards of the Washington Post (not to mention loads of people with Twitter accounts)

The Carters are coming! The Carters are coming! For weeks rumors have circulated that married icons Beyonce and Jay-Z would headline a tour this summer, and the rumors have now been confirmed: You can see the mega-stars Thursday, July 24 at Soldier Field as part of the “On the Run” tour. The title is a play on the 2013 Jay-Z track “Part II: On the Run” that featured - wait for it - Beyonce. A promotional item for the tour features a photo of the couple in ski masks. Good thing there's no mistaking Mrs. Carter's eyes.

Last night during the NBA Finals, Jay-Z debuted a three-minute commercial for the Samsung Galaxy phone and in the process revealed the following: Jay-Z is making a new album! The name of the album is "Magna Carta Holy Grail. " The album will be released on July 4, 2013 ... kinda. Producers Rick Rubin, Timbaland, Swizz Beats and Pharrell are involved! In what capacity is still to be determined, but still. Kanye West was in attendance during this session but wasn't shown on camera.

40/40 Clubs will collide with "The 20/20 Experience" all summer--not because "Suit and Tie" will be all over the radio but because Jay-Z (who owns the 40/40 Club sports bar chain) and Justin Timberlake, the men behind the (highly anticipated and mildly received) song, are reportedly planning a massive tour together for later this year. JT hinted at a big announcement on Twitter before the Grammys, where the pair performed together. It was apparently a preview of an 11- to 13-city tour set for stadiums around the...

When Jay Z and Justin Timberlake announced their “Legends of the Summer” stadium tour in February, it seemed like a shrewd business decision--putting arguably the commercial kings of hip-hop and pop/R&B together for a short, expensive tour. It suddenly gave another meaning to "being on their 'suit and tie' [bleep]" too: They were not just hobnobbing musicians in black ties by night but savvy brand managers in sharp business suits by day.   The tour predictably has been an insane success, garnering both sellouts and critical praise, and...

After squealing at a very suspect decibel for three solid minutes, it hit me that I didn't know what I wanted when I heard that Justin Timberlake was coming back. He's provided a lot of classic moments in music ( I know, the "c" word applied to the guy who sang "It's gonna be me. " Keep reading anyway. )  After a flagrant false start last week, we received the new Justin Timberlake song late last night - the first since 2006. The collective response has been tepid at best. Here are a few things that caught my attention after more than a...

As if Jay Z could get any cooler in the eyes of his fans. During his Greensboro, N.C. concert on Sunday, the rapper invited 12-year-old Justin onto the stage to rap one his songs. (Read more of the behind-the-scenes story on TMZ.com ) But Jay Z is no fool. He knows some of his lyrics can be controversial. So he stopped Justin from rapping the part of the song that references "drug dealing," and instead had him jump to the next part of the song. Watch for yourself to see how Justin performed...

Andrew Barber of FakeShoreDrive.com has been documenting Chicago rap at great length for years. I recently sat down with my friend Barber for a casual conversation about Barber's thoughts on "The College Dropout" and its impact on the city and hip-hop scene.   "I'd already been a huge fan of Kanye's production since Jay Z's "The Blueprint," and "Izzo" remains one of my favorite Jay songs to date. I remember the MTV News brief in '02, '03 about Kanye pursuing a solo rap career, and it was on my radar...

At some point Macklemore and Ryan Lewis went from breakout independent rap stars to a duo it was uncool to like. Is it theoretically surprising to see them take down Kanye, Jay Z, Drake and Kendrick all at once? Yes. But you know what? "The Heist" is a good album. It's fun. It has something to say. Let's turn the backlash backwards. Besides, there's nothing you can do about it. M+RL were big winners during Sunday's Grammys, taking home best new artist, best rap album and, more significantly, setting the scene for a mass wedding (officiated by Queen Latifah and...

During Jay Z's "Magna Carta Holy Grail" tour, he's been lending valuable stage time to a random concert-goer to spit his or her stuff for the audience. Thursday night at the United Center, the rapper in question was 19-year-old Monique "Mobo" Burrell of Kankakee. Her charismatic freestyle was captured and passed around social media -- watch the video, here -- garnering largely positive response and getting the attention of the Jiggaman himself. RedEye tracked her down, and the story of how she got that moment to...

** 1/2 (out of 4) Jay-Z has been rapping about having a lot of money for a long time: "Without rap, I was crazy straight/partner, I'm still spending money from '88" he spat on "Dead Presidents II" in 1996. Back then, though, there was a populist tilt to his rhymes, one that he saw as an empowering road map--a way to "help [thugs] see they way through it. " Even though he had a lot, he was there for those with little. On the new "Magna Carta Holy Grail," his 12th studio album, he's as wealthy as he's ever been, full-on...
