With all the talk about Jay Cutler's emotions, I started thinking: What does a happy Cutler look like? He smiles during news conferences, but they're the kind of smiles Jack Nicholson flashed in "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" when he was pretending to take his crazy pill to reassure Nurse Ratched that he was on board with ward policy. So I headed to the locker room after a news conference last week determined to learn more about Happy Jay Cutler. As it happened, I passed Cutler in the hallway.

NFL midseason reports usually are written after eight games - ya know, at midseason. But with seven games in the books and injuries piling up, the 2013 Bears have reached a crossroads. No time like the present, then, to distribute awards and look at what's to come.   MARTELLUS BENNETT The Mike Ditka Award for Best Season Ever for a Chicago Bears Tight End Iron Mike, meet the Black Unicorn. When the Bears signed Bennett after his one season with the N.Y. Giants, nobody knew quite what to expect from the gabby, imaginative player.

It's the question on every Bears fan's mind. No, not "Can Jay Cutler throw with his left hand?" The real question is: Can the Bears make the playoffs? Sure they can. If they win a few more games and finish at least 10-6. Will they win a few more games? Time will tell, but a quick look at the Bears' remaining schedule can give us a hint. So, let's do that.   Sunday vs. Kansas City, noon CBS A home game probably will be a little kinder to quarterback Caleb Hanie.

Sorry, but even if the Bears still are technically in the playoff hunt, it's time to start thinking about 2012. Sunday's 38-14 loss to Seattle at Soldier Field proved that this team, missing quarterback Jay Cutler and running back Matt Forte, has played its best football of the season. "A total disappointment," coach Lovie Smith said afterward. "We had five turnovers. You can't win with five turnovers, simple as that. We never got anything going with our running game ... it's tough when you're in that position.

"If people could see him not just when the cameras are on, yeah, you'd see a different side of him. " That quote from Gabe Carimi came in late September after the loss to the Packers. I was gathering material for a column on what "Happy Jay Cutler" looked like, and Bear after Bear told me Cutler is absolutely a happy, jokey, light-hearted guy - just not always on the field, and not always with the media. Carimi's quote has been in my head for the past month, and during my time around the Bears I've begun to see Cutler's jokey side.

Ouch. And double ouch. The football gods dropped the hammer on Bears Nation on Monday, as quarterback Jay Cutler is out at least four weeks with a torn groin muscle and linebacker Lance Briggs is out four to six weeks with a shoulder fracture. Which means the Bears have to replace their offensive leader and their defensive leader for at least a month. Coach Marc Trestman did his best to look on the bright side, as coaches do. "The positive thing is they're not out for the season," he told reporters at Halas Hall, adding that neither player will require surgery.

Reading what Joakim Noah says about Luol Deng, you want to wrap your arm around the Bulls center and tell him it's gonna be OK. On Wednesday, the Bulls will face Deng for the first time since he was traded to Cleveland earlier this month. "I love Luol," Noah said. "He's my brother. But when that ball goes up, he's not going to be my brother. " OK, so Noah won't go easy on his former teammate on the court. But his friendship with Deng has earned a spot among the top Chicago sports bromances.

Jay Cutler apparently knows how to take a compliment. The Bears quarterback maintained a sense of humor Wednesday when asked if it was true that he had the nicest rear end in the NFL. "According to one person. I guess she's biased," Cutler replied with a big smile at the end of his weekly media session at Halas Hall. The question was in reference to the tweet Cutler's former fiancee, Kristin Cavallari, delivered before Monday's game in Philadelphia. "To the man with the best butt in football, good luck tonight @jaycutler6 ill be watching," Cavallari wrote Monday on her Twitter account, @KristinCav.

Like clockwork Monday, the Brett Favre rumors began. It happened when Philadelphia was in search of a backup quarterback this summer. It happened when Indianapolis lost Peyton Manning before the season began. It happened when Houston lost starter Matt Schaub a few weeks ago. And it happened when the Bears lost Jay Cutler. ESPN reported Monday that a "source" in the Favre camp said the 42-year-old quarterback would listen if the Bears called him. He shouldn't expect his phone to ring anytime soon.

It's no secret Mayor Emanuel is known for his dirty mouth. President Obama zinged him in 2009 when he said "for Rahm every day is a swearing-in ceremony. " Even a fake news release on April Fool's Day from the mayor's office said that the only F-word Emanuel now uses is FOIA, which stands for Freedom of Information Act. Here's a look at five others who got busted for cursing on the job. President Obama told the "Today" show in 2010 that he visited the Gulf Coast so he knows "whose ass to kick" for the BP oil spill.
