Because everyone from Chicago is actually from Ohio, none of us actually spends Thanksgiving here. This was my first year staying in the city for the holiday. You see, there are amazing benefits to Thanksgiving in Chicago. During a so-called "Friendsgiving," you do not have to cringe at your drunk, racist uncle/aunt/grandma/whoever while thinking, "God, I hate Thanksgiving. " If you have Thanksgiving in Chicago, you can go out the night before. Blackout Wednesday means you can cripple your friends' plans for 7 a.m. buses and flights.

Linsanity continues, for better or for worse. And for Ben & Jerry's, it was for the worse. The ice cream-maker had to apologize to N.Y. Knicks star and cultural phenomenon Jeremy Lin for its "Taste the Lin-Sanity" yogurt offered in Cambridge, Mass., featuring fortune cookies. In case you've missed the link: Lin is of Asian descent. "We offer a heartfelt apology if anyone was offended by our handmade Lin-Sanity flavor," the store said on its Facebook page. "We are proud and honored to have Jeremy Lin hail from one of our fine, local universities and we are huge sports...

With high temperatures in store for another few months, it's time to get serious about which frozen dessert you're going to pledge allegiance to this summer. Are you an old-school ice cream fan? Or do you prefer a smoother, creamier gelato? What about a tricked-out frozen custard blended with a handful of toppings? If you're still on the fence, a ride from west to east along Belmont Avenue (hop on and off the #77 bus) provides all the taste-testing you need to come to an informed decision.

I can already tell I am going to spend way too much of my money here. That's what I thought to myself as I took my first spoonful of ice cream at Jeni's Ice Creams (3404 N. Southport Ave. 773-348-7139), the first Chicago scoop shop from Columbus, Ohio-based artisanal dessert company Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams. Chicago is the third-largest market for founder Jeni Britton Bauer's pint-by-mail business, and after constant requests from fans to open a store here, she set up shop just off the Southport Brown Line earlier this month.
