A cynic would describe Sunday's Bears game against Jacksonvile in two words: trap game. The symptoms are there: the Bears get hyped for a "Monday Night Football" road showdown, they drop 34 points on the NFL's top-ranked defense, then they go into Jacksonville and lay an egg. Maybe. Fortunately for the Bears, they're coached by Lovie Smith, who is 8-2 on Monday nights and 7-2 the game after. Let's look at some of Smith's finest moments on Mondays and the games that followed. Oct. 16, 2006: Bears 24, Arizona 23 Oct. 29, 2006: Bears 41, San Francisco 10 ...

It's not just you - the Bears and Philadelphia really have played each other an awful lot despite being in different divisions. They've crossed paths in the regular season the past four seasons, and each game has been decided by five points or fewer. Sounds like a perfect recipe for a rivalry. As the Bears (4-3) and Eagles (3-4) prepare to bump heads again Monday, here's what their most recent meetings have brought to the table. Entering the 2013 season, the Bears' Robbie Gould is the sixth-most accurate kicker in NFL history. Here are the field goals that stand out most. Jan. 14, 2007, vs. Seattle Gould tied this playoff game late in the fourth quarter with a 41-yard field goal, but it was his 49-yard game-winner in overtime that secured his place in Bears history. Both Gould and Patrick Mannelly rank this kick as his best. Feb. 4, 2007, vs. Indianapolis In Super Bowl XLI, Gould converted his only field goal attempt, a 44-yarder in the fourth quarter.

Orange you glad the Bears wore those jerseys Sunday? Ugh. Sorry. For the second time this season, the Bears donned their orange jerseys, and the results were about as good as they could have hoped. So, what how did orange help the Bears? Let us count the ways. Orange Julius Bears defensive end Julius Peppers forces a Calvin "Megatron" Johnson fumble with a vicious pro wrestling-style clothesline on the Lions' first drive. Brian Urlacher recovers, and the Bears jump out to a 7-0 lead on a Matt Forte touchdown run four plays later.

Preseason football generally is about as riveting as watching paint dry. Yet on Saturday, I found myself glued to the final two minutes of the Bears' preseason contest as if it were the Super Bowl as a fellow Lake Zurich High School alum was making headlines. Meaningless football suddenly became metaphorical. Bears fourth-string quarterback Matt Blanchard grew up across town from me and graduated from the same bucolic suburban high school in 2007 as I had seven years prior.

Sometimes I wish I didn't know anything about football. Because if I didn't, I might have enjoyed Sunday's two-point disaster against Detroit. I might even be smiling now, just like the bartender who served me and my friends during the game. For instance, when Jay Cutler and Brandon Marshall hooked up on the opening drive for three straight completions capped by a 32-yard pass and a 7-0 lead, the chipper bartender said, "We got a goal! Uh, a touchdown!" And then she laughed and said, "I don't watch a lot of sports.
