*1/2 (out of four) This true story of morally questionable, mid-20th century L.A. cops and their efforts to rid the city of organized crime and corruption contains so much intrigue, it's a wonder no one's done it before. Oops, they have. Sixteen years after Curtis Hanson's exceptional “L.A. Confidential,” the silly, redundant “Gangster Squad” attempts to mine the period for violent pizzazz and romantic va-va-voom. Its flair is all posturing, its hints of style nothing but hollow tricks.

After filming NBC's “The Playboy Club” and Starz' “Boss” in Chicago over the summer, Troy Garity misses the city. “I'm going through total Chicago withdrawal at the moment,” Garity, who also filmed the “Barbershop” movies here, said during a recent phone conversation from his home in L.A. The actor doesn't have long to wait for his Chicago fix. Production on Season 2 of “Boss” is expected to begin here in January. Until then, you can see Garity in the final two “absolutely fantastic” episodes of the first season at 9 p.m. Friday and Dec. 9.   The...

** (out of four) For all the exaggerated rumors swirling about Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio), you'd think he was Chuck Norris. He's a German spy! He kills for fun! He's richer than God! Does he also pay his bills with a roundhouse kick to a bank vault? A main point of F. Scott Fitzgerald's arguably overrated Jazz Age classic “The Great Gatsby” is that Gatsby's not the enigma he appears to be. He's merely a man in love with the past and his past love, Daisy (Carey Mulligan)

I've got some good news and some bad news, "Strike Back" fans. The action series will return for a fourth season in 2014, but it will be the show's final season. Cinemax announced the renewal Monday, adding that the 10-episode final season will film in Europe and, for the first time, in Asia, something co-executive producer, writer and director Michael J. Bassett hinted during San Diego Comic-Con. "We're going to go to Thailand," Bassett told me was on his wish-list. "I think we want to change the pallet and go to the East, go at a new enemy.

In many ways, though, the first three months of 2013's entertainment offerings have been consistently surprising and frequently awesome. Why? These 13 reasons. The best movie of the year so far stars Selena Gomez and Vanessa Hudgens No, “Spring Breakers” didn't come from the team that makes Adam Sandler's annual garbage, but there was little reason to believe writer-director...
