Brown Bag Lunch Truck owner and chef Joaquin Soler is opening a barbecue restaurant in Irving Park this month. Soler first began using the tiny space at 4009 N. Albany Ave. to host pop-up shops where he served dougnuts or chicken and waffles. Their success convinced him to park his truck and open Smalls. “It's a great little neighborhood," Soler said. "It's fairly underserved. There's not a lot of food options. " The restaurant will serve the same brined and smoked meats the food truck was known for along with ribs, fried chicken and seasonal local vegetables such as Asian long beans and asparagus.

Ice3 owner Erika Stone-Miller isn't interested in serving ice cream during the winter, so she's put her food truck in storage and is preparing to open The Octagon Mode in Ravenswood on Oct. 11. Not a traditional restaurant, the space at 1509 W. Lawrence Ave. will host dinner parties several times a week, mostly on Fridays and Saturdays, where about 12 to 18 people will mingle and dine at communal tables. "This kind of dinner is for people who want to be social," Stone-Miller said.

It may feel like summer came early this year, but the season doesn't truly kick off until May 5 when the Green City Market moves from its indoor location at the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum to the south end of Lincoln Park, where it will hold court 7 a.m.-1 p.m. every Wednesday and Saturday through October. This year, opening day will be celebrated with live music, tours and a demo by "Top Chef: Texas" runner-up Sarah Grueneberg ofSpiaggia. While the market is a cook's candy store thanks to its array of local produce, meats, cheeses and baked goods, there are also plenty of ready-made snacks for immediate gratification.

Food trucks have been popping up all over the city as part of the latest culinary craze, but they still face the challenge of on-board cooking being illegal according to local laws. While fans continue to lobby the city for change, some truck owners have been able to give their business some staying power by turning their mobile brand into permanent storefronts. Homage Street Food Opening a restaurant inspired by global street food has always been the plan for husband-and-wife duo Mike and Elaine Maloney.

A total of 13 food trucks will participate but only up to seven trucks will be selling food each day of the Taste, which runs from July 10-14 at Grant Park. There were 16 food trucks that applied to be part of the Taste. The three that did not get picked were either not licensed or not in good standing, said Cindy Gatziolis, spokeswoman for the city's Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events.
