Sam Mack played in the NBA for 10 seasons for five teams. But while his old teams aren't playing right now, Mack still is. He's a member of the American Basketball Association's Chicago Steam. Last season the Steam were the Midwest Regional ABA champs and Mack was an all-star. With the increasing likelihood that the Bulls won't play this year, the Steam are hoping basketball fans will turn their attention to the ABA. RedEye chatted with Mack about the ABA and the NBA lockout. What should NBA fans know about the ABA?

Danny Pudi's "Community" character, Abed Nadir, may have fallen short in RedEye's fourth Best TV Character Tournament this week, but the Chicago native thought the championship matchup was perfectly cast. After all, Abed's obsession with all things pop culture stands at the center of a series that constantly makes clever pop culture references, including to zombies. The reference was to "Shaun of the Dead" and not AMC 's "The Waking Dead," but still. "That kind of fits into the 'Community' world," he said of Abed's battle with "TWD" redneck Daryl Dixon.

I caught up with "Community"star Danny Pudi July 13 at San Diego Comic Con where the Chicago native thanked fans for the show's success. Pudi also accepted the trophy his character, Abed Nadir, earned for being voted runner-up in RedEye's 2011 Best TV Character tourney, thanking his family and friends in Chicago and fans everywhere for the honor. ( Daryl Dixon, Norman Reedus' "The Walking Dead" character, won. ) He then hinted at a theme evident in the NBC show's panel later in the day. "Six seasons and a movie," Pudi says in the video clip above, "and we couldn't have done it...

You know what would have been better than Connecticut winning the NCAA tournament the other night? It would have been better - and I say this as a college basketball fan - if Florida, Wisconsin, UConn and Kentucky had taken to the middle of the court Saturday, sat down and refused to play in solidarity with the Northwestern football team's fight to unionize. There was a rumor a few years back that a highly ranked college hoops power was planning to do just this until they got upset in an early round.

Now begins the annual flurry of press releases that I'll be getting in advance of the upcoming San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC). With each news item, I'll be feeling twinges of regret for not being able to attend this year. (Cue the sad trombone.) I'll be missing the fanfare, the fervor and seeing all the cool stuff that will be on sale! For example, there's always something new for Star Wars fans in the Lucas Pavilion , one of my fave areas at the convention. I've purchased many action figures and LEGO...

We seem to be on an entertainment streak this week, so this seemed as good a time as any to collect my thoughts on the bygone NBC cult hit “Friday Night Lights.” I'm terrified to report that throughout my viewing of all five seasons, I felt unusual things. I'm told these things were called “emotions.” Along with most Americans, I did not watch the high school football drama while it was on the air. Despite critical praise and ardent fan support, the show never found much of a following.

Norman Reedus doesn't watch TV, so "The Walking Dead" star wasn't familiar with any of the characters his TV persona, Daryl Dixon, defeated in RedEye's Best TV Character Tournament over the past two weeks. On Wednesday, the zombie-killing Daryl defeated Abed Nadir of NBC's "Community" to win the fourth tournament, and Reedus was pretty stoked to be the new champ. "I just want to thank all the people who are voting and the people who are watching the show and helping it become such a big success.

When Amanda Tapping saw the final mix for the Season 4 finale of "Sanctuary," she cried. "I wept and then I punched Damian [Kindler] in the arm and said, 'Why did you do that?'" Tapping told me Tuesday during a phone chat from Vancouver. The finale, "Sanctuary for None," will air in two hour-long parts at 9 p.m. Dec. 23 and 30 on Syfy. Written by James Thorpe and directed by Damian Kindler, the first part has Helen Magnus (Tapping) teaming with Hollow Earth rebel leader Caleb (guest star Gil Bellows)
