Two downtown marches have been organized for Friday as a peaceful sign of support for the family of Trayvon Martin, the unarmed 17-year-old who was shot and killed last month in Florida. Marchers are encouraged to wear their hoodies just like Martin wore when he was walking home from a convenience store and fatally shot on Feb. 26 by neighborhood watch captain George Zimmerman, who has not been charged. Both marches are intended to be calm, civil and peaceful, organizers said. The Justice for Trayvon march is scheduled to start at 3 p.m. by the bean in Millennium Park and head to State and Lake streets near the ABC News studios, said organizer Mikael Abdullah, 30, who grew up in East Chatham and now lives in Hammond, Ind. "Growing up, I lost so many of my friends to gun violence and gangs and it just sickens me," he said.

Band name: Summer Girlfriends Sound: This up-and-coming, pizza-obsessed group (seriously, check out the number of pizza mentions on its Facebook page!) laces its catchy garage-rock output with '60s girl-group melodies and a welcome dose of surf-rock guitar. Think Best Coast if frontwoman Bethany Cosentino ditched her pot stash and cat for a black leather jacket and ample reverb. Need to know: The quintet recently finished in fourth place in an online battle-of-the-bands competition put together by an apparel company--more than respectable considering over 800 acts entered the national contest.

If you ride the train Sunday, you'll need a CTA pass but you won't need pants. The annual No Pants Subway Ride kicks off at noon Sunday at 1210 W. Arthur St. The ride, which is scheduled to last three hours, is the same day as New York's annual No Pants Subway Ride, which began 10 years ago as a prank by an improv group. Chicago's event has been held for more than five years. More than 285 people signed up on Facebook to participate, as of Tuesday afternoon. More than 200 CTA riders took the Red Line last year sans pants, according to news reports.

I do my best to check out and usually join most social media networks - it's my job or whatever - but only when I think I can get genuine enjoyment out of it. When my mom joined modern-day society, my world changed. It happened when I saw a familiar message pop up on Facebook. "Jen's mom" wants to be friends with you. Do you accept? That lady in the picture looked an awful lot like the lady who gave birth to me, but there was no way she knew what Facebook was. She didn't even know how to turn on a computer. With an immediacy of a wild mongoose, I clicked "no" and closed my screen, hoping the friend invite was just a glitch in the universe - a momentary black hole whose vortex happened to be in the center of my little apartment.
