How can you gauge the big-time attention/scrutiny currently being given to The Orwells? Note how many interview topics are now off limits. In a mid-March phone interview, frontman Mario Cuomo, 20, couldn't comment on the garage-punk quintet's summer festival plans, the title of its full-length debut (later revealed to be “Disgraceland,” out June 3), or if the band (who recently toured with Arctic Monkeys) has received any other late night offers since scorching the set of “Late Night with David Letterman” in January (“A couple have called, but I can't really talk about it”)

Keep your eyes on Tom Hardy. Before the Brit starred in films like "Inception" or this year's "Warrior," he scorched the small screen as thuggish Freddie Jackson in the 2009 British miniseries "The Take" ( 8 p.m. Friday, Encore; 3.5 stars ). His unblinking, brutish presence has turned a rather traditional and ultra-violent crime drama into something exceedingly watchable and suspenseful. Encore is presenting the miniseries as an original for the network, premiering each of the four parts at 8 p.m. Dec. 2, 9, 16 and 23. As the story opens, thuggish Freddie is picked up...

Every February we celebrate Valentine's Day and Black History Month, but this one is extra special because we welcome NBC's "Community" back to TV after too long a hiatus. It's also when the high-profile Netflix series, "House of Cards," debuts. Back on the regular TV, "The Walking Dead" and "SouthLand" are back. As usual, I may have missed something, so let me know. And check back, I'll update regularly. Friday. Feb. 1 Noon | "Who Let the Dogs Out," Hallmark (series premiere; finding most talented dogs in America)

The TV tributes for Whitney Houston, who died Saturday in LA, began during Sunday's Grammy awards with Jennifer Hudson's simple, poignant performance of "I Will Always Love You" (see video below). At 7 p.m. Monday, Lifetime will present "The Bodyguard," the film in which Houston starred with Kevin Costner. She recorded "I Will Always Love You" for the movie. BET has planned a special three-hour edition of "106 & Park" Monday that will pay tribute to the singer's life and legacy.

David Letterman has been on a tear booking musical guests recently (Maybe Fallon's propensity for attracting young hot acts has his feet to the fire a little bit?) and last night continued that trend. Chicago's own The Orwells ripped through a furious version of the title track from their new EP "Who Needs You" and ended up having to collapse in Dave's chair. The host demanded an encore, seeming to be SUPER into it. Then a string breaks, Paul Shaffer gets involved ... and just watch the clip, a lot happens in a short period of time.

NBC released its midseason schedule for 2012, and missing from it are "Community" and "Prime Suspect. " Both ratings-starved but critically praised series have been pulled from the schedule. A spokesman from NBC has told me that "Prime Suspect" "is still under consideration but nothing definitive has been decided. " It's doubtful the show will be picked up for the rest of the season, despite the fact it's getting better each week. NBC will likely air the initial 13 episodes and then say good-bye.
