I have donned many a "sexy" costume in my decade or so of post-trick-or-treating Halloweens. It started out my first year of college with a sexy schoolteacher, a costume whose tight bustier and too-high heels did not mix well with the tear gas of another infamous UW-Madison Halloween. Sadly, I did not learn my lesson that year. I continued the trend with increasingly ridiculous costumes including a sexy Greek goddess, a sexy superwoman, a sexy Thing 2 from "Cat in the Hat," a sexy Natasha Fatale sans Bullwinkle and last year's unfortunate attempt to be both relevant and sexy: sexy honey badger.

By day, Kyle Mathis is a mild-mannered Edgewater resident, going about his daily duties at Arda Wigs on the North Side. But that won't be the case this weekend at the Chicago Comic and Entertainment Expo, where Mathis, 28, will suit up as Big Daddy Subject Delta from "BioShock 2" for the convention's inaugural Crown Championships of Cosplay. While this is C2E2's first time handing out awards for cosplay -- or costume play -- this is hardly Mathis' first time competing. He's won best in show awards for his portrayal of "Trigun" main man Vash the Stampede and "Nightmare Before Christmas"...

It'll be creepy, funny, weird, outrageous and creative on Halsted Street this Halloween as the Northalsted parade and costume contest walks a new route. "We have people who come from all over the city and the suburbs to attend this event," said Jen Gordon, spokesperson for the Northalsted Business Alliance, which holds the parade. As to how the celebration has become a key attraction for Halloween, Gordon said the appeal is simple: People throw all their time and energy into dressing up. "It's one of those parades where we really encourage creativity in the costumes.

If there's anything you can count on when it comes to comic book fans and their favorite characters, it's controversy over how certain costumes are interpreted for movies and television. You can go as far back as the first X-Men movie, when Bryan Singer swapped out spandex for leather in creating the mutant super-team's uniforms. I remember how that intially raised the ire of a few fanboys. It wasn't that long ago when Wonder Woman fans were up in arms over David E. Kelley 's take on the "Amazing Amazon" which involved her wearing...

Is the Cubs' season already this frustrating? It apparently is for one cub.  A video posted Saturday on YouTube shows a dustup at a Wrigleyville bar between a man in a Cubs costume and a patron who removed the mascot's furry head.  The video quickly racked up more than 30,000 views, thanks to a mention on Deadspin.  As the site notes, this is not the Cubs' new mascot, Clark the Cub, but rather a fan version that is not affiliated with the team.  Want more? Adam Hodge of Highland Park first saw "Gangnam Style" shortly after it went viral, and what he loved the most wasn't the whirlwind dancing, the plethora of girls or gratuitous waves of shaving cream. It was the wonder rendered by all of those elements together. "It was the cheese, the corniness," said Hodge, 27, who is the president and founder of Spiral Designs. "The moment I saw the video, I knew I wanted to be him for Halloween. " His ambitions were dashed, when, after a costume conversation with his friends, he discovered the...

Halloween is just around the corner, and while everybody will be doing their best Walter White and Johnny Football imitations, there are a handful of costumes that you will not see roaming the streets of Chicago on Oct. 31. Here is a list of Chicago's least popular costume ideas. 1. Derrick Rose on crutches Ladies and gentlemen, he's back - and not a moment too soon. When D-Rose went down against Philadelphia in 2012, I lay under my comforter for three days. People thought my dog died.

In Lifeline Theatre's "A Tale of Two Cities," the intimacy created between the small audience and even smaller cast of 10 actors means Elsa Hiltner's costumes have a big role to play. The most striking aspect of the costumes in this rendition of the classic Charles Dickens novel, adapted by Christopher M. Walsh and directed by Elise Kauzlaric, was how natural they seemed -- even with actors playing multiple roles. Though I have not personally experienced Europe in the late 1700s, each character's clothing felt perfect for the period.

For Elsa Hiltner, a seam here or a ruffle there makes all the difference when her work is in the spotlight. "I always wanted to be an artist and I was always really interested in people, so it's kind of like the perfect melding of both, because you make art and you make it to fit certain characters or certain people," said Hiltner, a Chicago costume designer whose work is regularly featured throughout the city. Born in Milwaukee, Hiltner moved to Chicago after graduating from Western Washington University in Bellingham, Wash., in 2006.

Doc Martens are cool--I've always thought so. And now Doctor Who has confirmed it. The 12th Doctor's new look was unveiled Monday by BBC America, which released the above photo of Peter Capaldi in costume. "Doctor Who" costume designer Howard Burden created the look that includes a dark blue Crombie coat with red lining, dark blue trousers, white shirt and black Doc Martens. "He's woven the future from the cloth of the past. Simple, stark, and back to basics. No frills, no scarf, no messing, just 100 per cent Rebel Time Lord," Capaldi said...

Benny Torres didn't mind how many people took photos with this year's costume. In fact, he insisted upon it. The 27-year old from Noble Square was, however, surprised at how much attention his “Che Guevara T-Shirt” costume got after he posted it on Reddit's r/Chicago, where it quickly rose near the top of the submissions on the subforum of the link-sharing site. The costume was simple, and cheap he said. He cut a hole in a red T-shirt, and kept a beard from running a recent marathon--the facial hair had co-workers commenting he looked like the former...

Jake Gunst's Halloween costume proved so offensive, he was yelled at, cussed out and hit. Repeatedly. All he was wearing was a blown up copy of his Ventra card, the new fare collection system for the CTA. “Everyone already hates the Ventra card,” the 26-year-old from Chinatown said. “I didn't have to do any twists on it for it to be a rude thing to wear for Halloween.” Gunst said he hit four parties over the course of Halloween week wearing a box with a near exact replica of his Ventra card he made in Photoshop.
