You wouldn't have guessed by its ratings, but ABC's cooking competition "The Taste" will be back for a second season, and the reality series is searching for pro and amateur cooks to compete in the new season. "The Taste" will come to Chicago for a casting call from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, July 13, at the Centered Chef, 177 N. Ada St. #101. In "The Taste," culinary celebrities such as Anthony Bourdain and Nigella Lawson coach teams of four pro and amateur cooks as they vie to create the best-tasting dishes.

The competition began in earnest last night on "Top Chef: Texas. " To keep things interesting this season, we're kicking off a point-based competition of our own for the six Chicago chefs in the cast. Challenge summary: In the opening quickfire challenge, the 16 cheftestants have one hour to cook rattlesnake, judged by Johnny Hernandez, chef/owner of La Gloria, who is known for cooking game at his Mexican street-food restaurant in San Antonio. A previous version of this story said the incident took place on the University of Chicago campus. It actually took place half a mile northeast of the main campus quadrangle.  A man was arrested near the University of Chicago campus early Monday morning after he assaulted a police officer responding to an emergency call, county prosecutors said. University of Chicago police officers responded to a call from an emergency phone operated by the university at 5428 S. Kimbark Ave. in Hyde Park just before 4 p.m. Monday, prosecutors said.

The cable networks are launching a slew of dramas in August, but for many viewers the big TV news for the month is the return of A&E's reality hit "Duck Dynasty. I look forward to January TV because one of my favorite shows, FX's "Justified," always premieres at the midseason. But the 2013 midseason schedule is special for another reason: "Cougar Town" begins its new life on TBS Jan. 8, the same night Season 4 of "Justified" begins. My DVR will be working hard this month. Hoping to change it prime time fortunes, NBC announced a bold new schedule Sunday filled with new shows and familiar stars. The network plans to introduce 17 new series during the season, including six new comedies, eight new dramas and three new reality shows. The schedule, announced by NBC's chairman of entertainment Robert Greenblatt, shakes up the network's schedule every night of the week except Sundays in the fall, which remains devoted to NBC's only sure thing--NFL football.
