With the NBA all but a distant memory, it's a real relief that good ol' fashioned hoops are in session once again. The folks here at the RedEye think it would be a good call to let me provide a 2011-12 season preview (I don't have the heart to tell them). This is not an in-depth look at conferences and RPI--I don't know what it means either--but a super-focused look at college basketball from a guy who doesn't care about the NCAA until the last week of February, when I spent ridic amounts of time making it seem like I've been watching every game of the season.

“They're heee-re!” The fifth annual Chicago Ghost Conference will haunt the city for two days, Oct. 4 and 5, at the Irish American Heritage Center (4626 N. Knox). The conference will cover everything from ghost hunting to parapsychology, all topics that Ursula Bielski, founder and chief organizer of the Chicago Ghost Conference, feels right at home with--literally. “I grew up in a haunted house in Chicago,” said the North Center native, who experienced numerous encounters with ghosts during her childhood.

Jay Cutler spoke about a wide range of topics Wednesday, but what did his words really mean? Let's translate them. ABOUT REHAB, JAY SAID … "It could be I'm done for the season. I just have to be smart about it and realize that there is a long-term picture here. " WHAT IT MEANS "Yeah, I'm totally done. Toast. Stick a fork in me. In the meantime, you should prepare for the official RedEye Sports Chicago Blackhawks WCSF Drinking Game, or RESCBWCSFDG for somewhat-short. When buying your booze, please reach for a Wirtz Beverage-distributed brand, so you can help defray Rostislav Olesz's $3 million-plus salary in Rockford. And if you need an excuse to show up hung over at work the next morning, cut this article out and show to your supervisor.

This past week I had the pleasure of covering the Big Ten tournament for the first time. I must say, I was not disappointed with what I saw. With a total paid attendance of 124,543, the Big Ten deserves a big pat on the back. But every year around this time, there is debate as to whether conference tournaments are good for college basketball. The most recent outspoken critic is Kentucky coach John Calipari. He's on the record as saying conference tournaments "are a waste of time.

I couldn't leave for Iceland without a few final thoughts on the Heartland Institute's International Climate Conference held at the Chicago Hilton last week. After spending two of the three days listening to speakers and mulling over what I'd "learned" for a few days, I've decided there was one extremely telling moment from my time there. Heartland, the Chicago-based organization known for its advocacy of global warming skepticism, garnered international attention this month by displaying a billboard out on the Eisenhower Expressway comparing people who...

Good news, Bears fans, this weekend's NFC championship game won't end with Jay Cutler limping, er, standing around on the sidelines with a sour look on his face. He'll be doing that at home. Just kidding, Jay. Tell Kristin Cavallari I said hi. Such a cutie. Where was I? Oh, yes, the Bears-less NFL playoffs. This weekend, the Super Bowl matchup will be set. Two teams will earn a chance at NFL immortality - and maybe even score with Madonna. I'm sorry, that's just wrong.

The setup: With a few exceptions, college football's marquee programs are busy beating high school teams. OK, so it's not THAT bad, but most scores are pretty lopsided. Our latest showdown tackles this unwritten "tradition. " This round: Should teams from major conferences play "cupcake" games?   NO You'd be outraged if you saw a 300-pound giant picking a fight with a much smaller opponent in a bar. The early part of the college football season, when alleged national championship contenders take on inferior competition, is the rough equivalent to this.
