At least three car hijackings took place in Chicago Lawn last month, according to a community alert police sent out Thursday. In each incident, two men used a handgun to coerce people into giving up their vehicles, the alert said. The first hijacking took place April 7 in the early morning at the 6100 Block of South Campbell Avenue. The second was reported around the 6100 Block of South Artesian Avevenue on April 27 around eight in the morning. And the third was reported around the 2200 Block of West 63rd Street on April 29 in the early morning.

Chicago Lawn last week recorded its second homicide of the month and sixth homicide of the year, a RedEye analysis of preliminary police data found. A 17-year-old boy was shot Wednesday in the 6300 block of South Mozart Street, police said. He died two days later, officials said. Chicago Lawn logged nine homicides last year, down from 22 killings in 2012, RedEye determined. Citywide, gunshot homicides were recorded in the last week in Ashburn, Gage Park, Rogers Park, South Shore, Washington Park, West Englewood and Woodlawn, according to police information.

The Chicago Police Department issued a business alert Tuesday afternoon warning Chicago Lawn businesses of a recent rash of pawn shop jewelry robberies. In the incidents, which were each reported in the month of December, one or two male offenders entered pawn shops and jewelry stores in the 8th and 10th police districts. While one brandished a handgun, the other would break the store display cases and steal jewelry from them, usually during business hours, the alert said. Three men in their 20s were shot to death in separate incidents in Chicago in the last week, according to a RedEye analysis of preliminary police data. A 26-year-old man was fatally shot Monday in the 11300 block of South Forest Avenue in Roseland, police said. That same day, a 22-year-old man was shot to death in the 2500 block of East 84th Street in South Chicago, according to officials. On Friday, a 20-year-old man was fatally shot in the 300 block of East 51st Street in Grand Boulevard, police said.

Austin, Chicago Lawn and West Englewood each saw two homicides in the last week, a RedEye analysis of preliminary police data found. In Chicago Lawn, a 22-year-old man and a 15-year-old boy were shot to death Tuesday in the 5900 block of South Francisco Avenue, police said. In Austin, an 18-year-old man was fatally shot Saturday in the 100 block of North Pine Avenue, police said. One day earlier, an 18-year-old man was shot to death in the 500 block of South Kilpatrick Avenue, according to officials.

Chicago Lawn saw a double homicide last week, Chicago's first double homicide in three months, a RedEye analysis of preliminary police data found. Two men, ages 30 and 22, were discovered fatally shot in the 7100 block of South Oakley Avenue, police said. Chicago Lawn has logged three homicides so far this year. The Southwest Side community area recorded 22 homicides last year, RedEye determined. The last double homicide was Feb. 20, when two women were shot to death in a Chatham apartment, according to police data.

Austin, Chicago Lawn, Englewood, New City and Pullman each saw two homicides in the last week, a RedEye analysis of preliminary police data found. In Austin, a 27-year-old man was shot to death Tuesday in the 1000 block of North Keystone Avenue, police said. Five days earlier, a 41-year-old Chicago police officer was fatally shot in the 1200 block of North Austin Boulevard, officials said. Austin recorded 29 homicides in 2011, up from 23 homicides in 2010, a RedEye analysis of preliminary police data found.

South Chicago on Sunday saw Chicago's first double homicide of the year, according to a RedEye analysis of preliminary police data. Two men, ages 18 and 35, were shot to death in the 9100 block of South Commercial Avenue, officials said. Chicago logged 11 double homicides last year, down from 24 double homicides in 2012, according to RedEye data. In the last week, gunshot homicides were recorded in Austin, Chatham, Chicago Lawn, Englewood, Portage Park and South Lawndale, RedEye determined.

New City saw two double homicides in two days, a RedEye analysis of preliminary police data found. On Sunday, two men, ages 21 and 22, were shot to death in the 700 block of West 50th Place, police said. Two days earlier, two men, ages 22 and 26, were fatally shot in the 5100 block of South May Street, according to officials. New City has recorded 12 homicides so far this year, according to RedEye data. The South Side community area logged 13 homicides in 2011, RedEye data found.

Two male teenagers were shot and killed in separate incidents in the last week, a RedEye analysis of preliminary police data found. A 16-year-old boy was fatally shot Saturday in the 6200 block of South St. Lawrence Avenue in Woodlawn, police said. Three days before, a 19-year-old man was shot to death in the 6400 block of South Campbell Avenue in Chicago Lawn, according to officials. Four of the seven homicide victims so far this year were teenagers, RedEye determined as of Wednesday afternoon.

Buoyed by a less violent spring, Chicago posted a nearly 17 percent decrease in homicides in 2013 compared with 2012, a RedEye analysis of preliminary police data found. Chicago logged 435 homicides last year, compared with 521 killings in 2012, RedEye determined. That was the first time the city had topped 500 homicides since 2008 - a statistic that made national headlines. Two Chicago men were arrested Thursday morning in Chicago Lawn and accused of robbing a Sprint cell phone store at gunpoint. Omar Anderson, 20, and Victor Mayberry, 18, entered the cell phone outlet, 7920 S. Western Ave., in the morning armed with a gun, according to court records. The men then told two store employees to stuff cash from the register and as many cell phones, particularly iPhones, as they could into bags, county prosecutors said. South Shore recorded two homicides on Thursday, one of the deadliest days of the year, a RedEye analysis of preliminary police data found. At about 4:45 a.m. Thursday, a 74-year-old man was fatally shot in the 7000 block of South East End Avenue in South Shore. A half hour later, a 41-year-old man was shot to death in the 6700 block of South East End Avenue, police said. McKinley Park saw a double homicide Saturday, police said. Two men, ages 17 and 20, were killed in an auto crash when one vehicle rammed another vehicle near the intersection of Western and Archer Avenues, police said. The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office ruled the deaths homicides. McKinley Park has seen two homicides so far this year. The Southwest Side community area logged one homicide last year, RedEye data shows. This weekend, Englewood is joining the list of Chicago neighborhoods with their own alderman-led community tours. The tour, led by 15th Ward Alderman Toni Foulkes, will make stops at the local library and firehouse, Growing Home, the South Side neighborhood's urban farm and job training site, and a new water park playlot built last year on Hermitage Avenue. Foulkes has been holding a bike tour of Chicago Lawn, the other neighborhood encompassed by her ward, since 2008, with the goal of promoting exercise and wellness to ward residents.
