Will Smith, meet ... Gen. Cypher Raige? Maybe we shouldn't be too surprised by this news, since it comes from a man whose actual name is M. Night Shyamalan. Will's playing the lead in his new flick, "After Earth," which is due out next summer, and we couldn't have picked a better name out of a hat if we'd tried. But how does it stack up compared to his past roles. We ranked a few based on awesomeness to find out. damoran@tribune.com | @redeyedana   1990 Will Smith, "Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" (1)

It was useless for Minnesota to resist. The Blackhawks, with legitimate delusions of Stanley Cup grandeur, have a 2-0 lead in their playoff series against Minnesota after a 4-1 win Sunday at the United Center. Maybe it was the force - Sunday was May the 4 th , aka "Star Wars Day" - that propelled the Hawks to victory. They looked shaky at times but overwhelmed Minnesota when they had to, scoring two goals in the third period to put the game out of reach. "They're a patient team and they play well defensively, and sometimes when they do that you get frustrated," Hawks forward...

Jesse Metcalfe was born in 1978, the year "Dallas" debuted, so obviously he didn't watch the show during its original run. Now 33, he's starring in TNT's continuation of the iconic series as Christopher Ewing, the adopted son of Bobby (Patrick Duffy). While Metcalfe is best known as the sexy gardener who slept with Eva Longoria in "Desperate Housewives," he's playing a more honorable sort in "Dallas," which premieres at 8 p.m. June 13. Metcalfe and I talked recently about original cast members Duffy, Larry Hagman and Linda Gray, his initial hesitation to join the project...

"Game of Thrones" star Alfie Allen, who plays the conflicted Theon Greyjoy, doesn't even know the exact fate of his character in Sunday's Season 2 finale of the HBO hit. "It's really cool," he told me Friday during a phone conversation. "For some fans it may turn out well and for some maybe not, but you can perceive it in any way you want, really. " "I don't even know whether I'm alive or dead yet, so we'll just have to wait and see," he added, laughing. You can expect to see Theon struggle to hold on to Winterfell, where he was forced to grow up with the Starks after...

Niall Matter found the perfect role when he joined the cast of  "Eureka. " "I'm not unlike Zane in a lot of ways," said Matter, speaking of Zane Donovan, the snarky, bad-boy physicist he's played since the second season of the Syfy series about a town of genius inventors and scientists. Matter isn't a physicist, but he knows computers well enough to have recently fixed co-star Neil Grayston's. His eight years working on Canadian oil rigs when he was younger prepared him for the action-hero-worthy stunts he gets to do as Zane.

"Helix" star Kyra Zagorsky didn't know much about her character when filming began in Montreal, but she kind of like it that way. "I had to discover everything and that was, I think, part of the fun in being on the show," the actress said during a recent conference call with writers. "I just realized ... 'I have no idea what's to come, but I have to just trust that I'm her and start working with her.'" The "her" Zagorsky refers to is Dr. Julia Walker, the tough, smart researcher she plays in Syfy's new hit that infected 1.82 million total...

In "The Borgias," Francois Arnaud says, his character is finally "the Cesare Borgia he was meant to be, he always wanted to be. " He's also the Cesare Borgia that Arnaud always expected to play--"a warrior, a politician, a go-getter, really. He's now free from the cloth and from his father, pretty much. So it was a great year for Cesare. " Showtime's historical drama follows the family of Rodrigo Borgia (Jeremy Irons), a Spaniard who in the 15th century bribed, poisoned and otherwise forced his way to becoming Pope Alexander VI....

Philip Winchester's character, Sgt. Michael Stonebridge, has been wrestling some heavy demons in the new season of "Strike Back. " In the season premiere, he was forced to kill one of his Special Air Service trainees. The trainee's brother, former special forces soldier Craig Hanson, got his twisted vengeance by killing Stonebridge's wife. The murder pushed Stonebridge, as his Section 20 partner Sgt. Damian Scott (Sullivan Stapleton) said in the Aug. 31 episode, down a rabbit hole.

Rapper-turned-movie-actor Common wasn't looking for a TV role, but something about Elam Ferguson drew him to AMC's new Western "Hell on Wheels. " "I hadn't seen any material written this great for a black character, especially of this time period, and I was so attracted to the role because I felt like, man, this is some depth. There's depth in this human being," the Chicago native said during a phone interview last week. "They wrote Elam Ferguson as a person who was a slave that had been oppressed but [was]

Billy Bob Thornton has played his share of wonderfully wacky characters. His latest might be the most bizarre, menacing and poorly coiffed. Thornton stars as dangerous drifter Lorne Malvo in FX's "Fargo," a 10-episode limited series debuting April 15 that's a spinoff of the Coen brothers' beloved 1996 cult hit. Malvo, with his goofy hairdo and penchant for messing with people, does just that to milquetoast insurance salesman Lester Nygaard (Martin...

For Elsa Hiltner, a seam here or a ruffle there makes all the difference when her work is in the spotlight. "I always wanted to be an artist and I was always really interested in people, so it's kind of like the perfect melding of both, because you make art and you make it to fit certain characters or certain people," said Hiltner, a Chicago costume designer whose work is regularly featured throughout the city. Born in Milwaukee, Hiltner moved to Chicago after graduating from Western Washington University in Bellingham, Wash., in 2006.

The multiple clone characters Tatiana Maslany plays in BBC America's "Orphan Black" might look alike, but they definitely don't act the same. That meant Maslany had to create histories, attitudes, accents and mannerisms for each of the very different clones viewers will meet throughout the season. Part of that process, the Canadian actress told me during a recent phone interview, involved making music playlists for each of the clones she plays. "I played around with music, different playlists for each character,...
