California-based Lagunitas is planning a Chicago-based brewery at 18th Street and Rockwell, founder Tony McGee (@LagunitasT) announced last night to his followers on Twitter. "We're gonna make a little bit o' NorCal right there in the City of Chicago. You 6,380 follower folk are the first to hear it!" read one tweet. BeerPulse.com was the first to report the news. A call to Lagunita's brewery office in Petaluma, Calif. has not yet been returned, but here's a linked-together account of Magee's series of tweets: "Back in Feb, I thought about all the truck loads of brew leaving eastward.

New breweries need to stand out if they are going to make an impact in Chicago's busy craft beer scene. Forbidden Root , a new Chicago brewery set to hit taps in early June, is poised to do it. Calling itself a 'botanical brewery,' Forbidden Root uses roots, herbs and spices in its beers, harkening back to a somewhat forgotten American brewing tradition. The result is a lineup of beers that are unique, complex and probably unlike any other craft beer you've recently tried. News about the brewery recently has focused on its efforts to open a West Town taproom , but as zoning concerns...

The first thing Jared Rouben does when we meet is suggest we talk over a lunch of charcoal-grilled chicken, refried beans and arroz amarillo. We're here to chat beer - specifically, his coming-soon Pilsen brewery, Moody Tongue - but food is never far from his mind. "Beer is food. Brewing is cooking," Rouben said, explaining his style of beer-making which he calls 'culinary brewing.' "I became a much better brewer when I started using culinary techniques in the brewhouse, when I started thinking like a cook to create different flavors.

Other breweries sell merchandise like baseball hats, hoodies and pint glasses. Naperville-based Solemn Oath envisions its new Sover line as much more than that. "What we're trying to do is build a lifestyle brand," said John Barley, president of Solemn Oath. "It gives us an outlet to express ourselves, and it's a new challenge that we're welcoming. " Conceived over the course of three days camping in Wisconsin, the Sover line (pronounced So-VAIR) will launch in July with nine pieces of design-driven apparel from artists Jourdon Gullett - who designs labels and artwork for Solemn Oath...

Though Metropolitan Brewing owners Doug and Tracy Hurst have been looking to expand their brewery's capacity for a while, their first public proclamation came Wednesday, via a short and succinct Tweet : "Oh, just spent time today scouting locations for our new brewery. You know, nbd. " Oh, but it is a big deal. The Chicago-based brewery, established in 2008, is one of the few that concentrates on lagers instead of ales, brewing popular beers like Krankshaft Kolsch and Dynamo Copper Lager.

Chicago craft beer fans who follow Lagunitas founder Tony Magee on Twitter have had a pretty clear view of the back-and-forth between the brewery and the city. Since announcing plans in April to open a tap room and production brewery in Chicago, Lagunitas has been working with the city to ensure that the Douglas Park facility, a former steel distribution warehouse, would be up to fire code. As Magee found out, morphing the 1970s building into a sleek - and safe - brewery was going to take some work.
