The gymnasium at Bradwell Elementary School was packed Thursday morning with 100 teachers and principals from around Chicago, plus a handful of students, a bundle of OfficeMax employees and loads of media, all in attendance to recognize educators for their work. Doing the recognizing would be Bears receiver Brandon Marshall, CPS CEO Barbara Byrd-Bennett, and OfficeMax CEO Ravi Saligram, as part of their A Day Made Better initiative. The initiative is one in which the company reimburses teachers for the money they spend out of pocket each year, a total that the National Education Association has...

Reading what Joakim Noah says about Luol Deng, you want to wrap your arm around the Bulls center and tell him it's gonna be OK. On Wednesday, the Bulls will face Deng for the first time since he was traded to Cleveland earlier this month. "I love Luol," Noah said. "He's my brother. But when that ball goes up, he's not going to be my brother. " OK, so Noah won't go easy on his former teammate on the court. But his friendship with Deng has earned a spot among the top Chicago sports bromances.

The Bears finally have that No. 1 wide receiver fans have been asking for year. On Tuesday, the Bears traded two third-round draft picks for Brandon Marshall, quarterback Jay Cutler's former Denver Broncos teammate. The move was met with near unanimous cheers. Marshall, 27, is 6-foot-4 and gives Cutler a big target and playmaker. So, why is Marshall such a big deal? Check him out vs. the Bears' top receivers.   81 Number of receptions Marshall had last season, 10th in the NFL. 52 Number of receptions Matt Forte had last...

Seven years. Seven! Years! That's the length of Jay Cutler's new contract with the Bears. Was it a good deal or bad deal for Chicago? Two RedEye contributors duke it out. Smart Move, Bears By Matt Lindner Jay Cutler needs the Bears, but the Bears need Jay Cutler even more. Now the most polarizing athlete in the history of Chicago is ours to debate for another seven years. In one fell swoop, Bears GM Phil Emery nearly broke the internet Thursday morning by announcing he had signed the greatest quarterback in franchise history - that's not a misprint - to a deal that'll keep him in town through...

I've been playing fantasy football for longer than many RedEye readers have been alive, and there's been one constant in all that time: You build a great fantasy team with running backs. Not anymore. If you want to have a great fantasy team these days, you must have great receivers. The NFL is a passing league and with so many teams using running backs by committee, pass catchers like A.J. Green, Dez Bryant and Brandon Marshall are huge difference makers. Brandon Marshall, Bears I know Jay Cutler is out for an extended period, so you may think Marshall has no value.

If we've learned anything about those of you who voted for RedEye sports Stud and Dud of the year, it's that you love monstrous dudes slamming into each other. Uhhh, let us explain. By that we mean you're big fans of pro wrestling and hate the fact that hockey's elite players are on the shelf right now. After two weeks of voting on RedEye Sports' Facebook page, CM Punk took home the Stud of the Year title for the second straight year. The Chicago native successfully defended the WWE Championship in April by defeating Chris Jericho.

Dig deep enough in anyone's closet and you'll find a couple skeletons. None likely as severe as the one that came tumbling out of Brandon Marshall's early Wednesday morning, when news began circulating that he was arrested and accused of punching a woman in the face in a Chelsea nightclub over the weekend, just before the Bears gave up two third round draft picks to bring him to town. Granted, Marshall's skeletons make any of our own past transgressions seem downright trite in comparison.

Week 1 in the NFL is here, and for the first time in over a decade the Bears have more than a few viable fantasy regulars. Am I drinking Bears Kool-Aid? Yes, based on facts. The team has outstanding fantasy options, and that's without even mentioning the defense or Devin Hester. Look for these Bears to provide a huge lift all season. Jay Cutler Cutler was hampered by a thumb injury and offensive coordinator Mike Martz in 2011. But this year he is a top-tier fantasy QB. The positives: great arm, good awareness in the pocket, loves to throw to Brandon Marshall.

First off, it was the Cowboys. Secondly, it was zero degrees outside, and they are the modern poster children of the warm weather sissy team. Remember the Ice Bowl in '67? They lost that game too. Nonetheless, thank you Josh McCown. Where have you been all of our lives? Playing with all those toys like that. And so the debate rages on. McCown or Jay Cutler. If Cutler is ready, I say Cutler. But I'm in the minority around here. Certainly, Brian Urlacher disagrees with me but hey, all of the sudden he's a media star after mumbling his way around town for 13 years.

In the end, the Bears' scrappy effort wasn't enough. "It was really a day of missed opportunities," coach Marc Trestman said. Settling for a field goal. Costly penalties. They were just part of the equation in Sunday's 21-19 loss to Detroit at Soldier Field. Gone is the Bears' share of first place in the NFC North, as they dropped to 5-4. Two of those losses are to Detroit. Bears receiver Brandon Marshall, for one, really does not like the Lions (6-3), who lead the division.

The Bears host the Giants on Thursday in what should be a great game. And it should be a track meet, as the Bears are beaten up on defense and the Giants defense has been nonexistent. Which means both teams could have fantasy game changers. Jay Cutler, Bears quarterback It's Year 5 for Cutler in a Bears uniform, and from a fantasy perspective he is a dud. Cutler lit it up with the Broncos, especially in 2008, but has been a fantasy disappointment with the Bears. RedEye asked the Bears to single out which teammates they're most excited to see on the field - one each on offense, defense and special teams, and one rookie. OFFENSE Robbie Gould, kicker: Brandon Marshall. He's been great. He's a big-bodied receiver with a lot of ability. He'll be able to open the field up for the other receivers. The Bears will get a heavy dose of their former backup QB as the preseason begins Thursday, though we admit there are much bigger short-term draws, namely the return of Super Bowl XLI villain Peyton Manning. Bears coach Marc Trestman has spoken highly of quarterback Jay Cutler since taking over the team. Some of the good things Trestman has said: "He's a bright football guy," "He's great to work with" and "Jay understands this offense. " My question is, does he really understand it? While Cutler has said time and again that everyone on the team has "bought into" Trestman's offense, one can question if he is an exception. For example, in the second preseason game, against San Diego, all five of Cutler's passes were intended for Brandon Marshall.

Because preseason NFL football barely resembles the real thing most of the time, it can be tough to determine how much stock to put into what you're seeing. We're to help you sort out what resembles a hoax and what deserves your concern.   Manti Te'o's injury How real: 4 out of 5 The former Notre Dame linebacker was in a walking boot and sidelined for Thursday's game.
