**** (out of four) Obviously the sex-addiction drama “Shame” has been rated NC-17 because of its nudity (something everyone experiences every day) and sex (something many people wish they experienced every day). Much has been written about the pro-violence, anti-sex rating system's foolishness, so we'll leave that alone. What deserves more conversation is star Michael Fassbender (Rochester in "Jane Eyre," Magneto in "X-Men: First Class"), who's fantastic in everything; in the riveting "Shame," he delivers the year's best male...

He'll never be a Heisman Trophy finalist, but that doesn't matter one bit to Northwestern's Brandon Williams. Rather, the longtime Wildcats holder has his eye on an even more coveted award, one so prestigious that it exists only in his imagination. For now. "I don't even need to win the thing," he said. "I just want to be on a watch list. " Williams announced his "candidacy" for the Holder of the Year, an award that doesn't exist, via the Ryan Field scoreboard during the season opener.

The gymnasium at Bradwell Elementary School was packed Thursday morning with 100 teachers and principals from around Chicago, plus a handful of students, a bundle of OfficeMax employees and loads of media, all in attendance to recognize educators for their work. Doing the recognizing would be Bears receiver Brandon Marshall, CPS CEO Barbara Byrd-Bennett, and OfficeMax CEO Ravi Saligram, as part of their A Day Made Better initiative. The initiative is one in which the company reimburses teachers for the money they spend out of pocket each year, a total that the National Education Association has...

Today Incubus singer Brandon Boyd stopped by Tribune Tower for an interview on our 22nd floor deck. If you think he's difficult and arrogant and the embodiment of what you imagine the frontman of a very successful rock band to be, you're almost certainly not an Incubus fan or someone who's ever seen/read an interview with the mellow, open, thoughtful Boyd--who appears with the California rockers Friday at First Midwest Bank Amphitheatre. The 36-year-old artist/author/environmental advocate/surfer talked about everything from the band's early days playing Bar Mitzvahs to their feelings...

The Bears finally have that No. 1 wide receiver fans have been asking for year. On Tuesday, the Bears traded two third-round draft picks for Brandon Marshall, quarterback Jay Cutler's former Denver Broncos teammate. The move was met with near unanimous cheers. Marshall, 27, is 6-foot-4 and gives Cutler a big target and playmaker. So, why is Marshall such a big deal? Check him out vs. the Bears' top receivers.   81 Number of receptions Marshall had last season, 10th in the NFL. 52 Number...

When Brandon Mahone took the stage for his blind audition, singing the Temptations' classic "I Wish it Would Rain," it only took about 20 seconds for "The Voice" judge Adam Levine to swing his chair around to take a look at the 18-year-old former Chicago resident. Mahone recently moved to Indianapolis due to the violence in the Auburn Gresham neighborhood where he grew up, but still claims roots in the city. RedEye talked to Mahone about his relocation, growing up in Chicago and his audition experience.

Before forwarding the link, my brother asked if I had any interest in killing about an hour of my time. I said sure, why not. And now my life is different. The link he sent me was to thuzio.com, a booking agency for former (and some current) athletes offering a range of personal appearance services. Live in the San Diego area and want former Seattle second baseman Bret Boone to show up to your fantasy baseball draft? That'll be $1,000. It might seem like a steep price to pay, but it'll be worth it to see the look on your friends' faces as they...

Brandon Boyd, a giant rock star for nearly the last decade and a half as singer and lyricist for Incubus, arrives in the Tribune Tower lobby by himself. No publicist. No manager. No entourage. Just a guy in a porkpie hat, comfortable doing an interview in jeans with a few holes and a T-shirt with more of 'em, without a team of handlers making any decisions. Any fan of the band, who released its most stripped-down album “If Not Now, When?” last year and appears today at First Midwest Bank Amphitheatre, knows that Boyd has long been a person who...

After the year “Shame” star Michael Fassbender has had, the GQ Breakout Man for 2011 should be in a good mood. Still, anyone who has seen Fassbender (“X-Men: First Class,” “Jane Eyre”) in British director Steve McQueen's harrowing 2008 film “Hunger” or sees him in the excellent, intense, NC-17-rated sex addiction tale “Shame” opening Dec. 2 would be surprised, as I was, to walk into an Elysian hotel room to find Fassbender and McQueen dancing. “Let's do the interview dancing, all three of us,” Fassbender tells me,...
