Reality is starting to kick in, folks. As much as we may not like to admit it, it's looking like we're not gonna see any pro hoops soon. Not sure about the rest of you, but one of the cornerstones of my winter is cuddling up on my couch and watching whatever NBA game is on, even if it's a snoozefest like Spurs-Warriors or something. So now we're left to scramble for quality winter entertainment. I've done some research into sports that I think can be quality basketball substitutes.

EA Sports may have found the best time to put a player on a video game cover. The company announced Tuesday that Derrick Rose, who is recovering from knee surgery and may not play until the middle of next season, will be on the cover of "NBA 2K13. " Does that mean the Bulls superstar will be immune to the "cover curse" that seems to befall so many athletes? Bulls fans can only hope so. As for the L.A. Clippers' Blake Griffin and Oklahoma City's Kevin Durant, who share the "2K13" cover with Rose, they're probably crossing their fingers as we speak.

The Bulls were ahead of their time. When the team landed Derrick Rose with the No. 1 pick in 2008 and turned their fortunes around, it was just the beginning of a huge change in the NBA. Now, the NBA features a plethora of top-tier teams that were scraping the bottom of the barrel in recent years. The Philadelphia 76ers are one of those teams. The Bulls figured that out Wednesday night when they lost 98-82. Just two seasons ago, the 76ers were among the Eastern Conference's worst teams.

I recently learned that my good friend "Joe" will soon be a father of a baby girl. I immediately began devising the social science experiment we will perform to turn his little girl into a WNBA superstar. A little context: Joe and I are friends because 1) I am a white guy who likes rap music, and he finds this amusing (please do not tell Joe that in fact all white guys like rap music and replacing me would be as hard as going to a Wrigleyville bar on a Saturday night and seeing who knows all the lyrics to "Ahem, Ah, Uhhh, You Know, N-words in Paris" - as white guys call that song)

It's bad luck that we'll never get to see Michael Jordan play against LeBron James in their primes. With MJ turning 50 earlier this week, we got to relive Jordan's greatest hits on every platform imaginable. And hey, the Miami Heat are in town Thursday. No better time to take a harder look at the career comparison of James and Jordan. The idea that LeBron could one day be considered greater than MJ seems insane, but when Phil Jackson, Charles Barkley and Isiah Thomas say it, there's got to be some truth there, right?
