As a proud Iowa alum, I follow the university on Facebook. Today, it posed this question: "What comes to mind when you think of Chicago," presumably because the Hawkeyes take on Northern Illinois at Soldier Field this weekend for the season opener. (Go Hawks!) Among the many predictable "pizza," "Cubs" and "Blues Brothers" answers were these gems worth sharing: -Glen Ellyn... as in, some sorority girl telling me she's from Chicago when she's actually from Glen Ellyn - Lots of unemployed peeps - Pizza and that president guy - a big freaking city also known...

*** (out of four) To fill Matt Damon's/Jason Bourne's shoes, an actor/character must be fleet of foot, squeeze into tight spaces and possess badass hand-to-hand combat skills. No problem. As Aaron Cross, another special operative feeling the heat of pursuit from his superiors once they issue ghost protocol (no, they don't call it that) to cancel his program, Jeremy Renner (“The Hurt Locker,” “The Avengers”) transitions smoothly into leading man status. He's scrappy.

** (out of four) If subjected to a movie about a niche sport in a distant place, I'd admittedly much rather see “Ping Pong in Bora Bora” or “Jai Alai Atop Mount Everest.” Still, it's odd how clearly the characters in “Salmon Fishing in the Yemen” recognize the inanity of the film's premise. “Who the hell cares?” asks Harriet (Emily Blunt) at one point about her efforts to work with Dr. Fred Jones (Ewan McGregor) in hopes of satisfying a sheikh's (Amr Waked)

Two weeks ago, I went to a friend's dinner party on North Avenue and ended up spending the evening socializing with a particularly pretty gal pal of his. When the conversation shifted to her recent engagement, the 23-year-old bride-to-be was absolutely glowing as she recalled the details of how her guy had proposed. Maybe it's because I am a recording artist (or maybe I am just a closet commitment-phobe), but being tied down right now seems like a fate worse than death. However, even I had to swoon when she showed us her super pretty, totally modern-looking...

Well, we're happy to say we told you so. Today Milwaukee Summerfest announced its Emerging Artists Series, and several of the names are familiar: RedEye 2013 Rock 'n' Vote finalists AboveWaves (June 27), and 2011 finalists Aktar Aktar (June 27). That's not it for the Chicago representation, either. Gemini Club (July 2), Blah Blah Blah (June 26), Great Divide (July 5) and Bonzie (July 6) will also appear on the U.S. Cellular Connection stage June 26-July 7. Other highlights on the calendar include Kitten (who just opened for Paramore at Chicago Theatre)

Even for the Cubs, this has been a bizarre week. You can't help but think there's something else at work. You know what we mean. No deal The Cubs wanted to have a Wrigley Field renovation plan in place by Monday. Uh, yeah, that didn't happen. They're still talking things over with city officials and Wrigleyville rooftop owners. Blah, blah, blah. Curse meter: 2 out of 5   Ewwwww … We're all for sending a message to team management when things aren't working out, but not like this.

"Nikita" is unraveling plot twists every Friday, but it won't solve at least one mystery before the final season ends: Who exactly is flying Team Nikita's plane? "Will you tell me if you find out? I have no clue," star Maggie Q told me, laughing, during a recent interview. "We would talk about different situations and bringing on different pilots and people they know. And then who actually flies and blah, blah, blah, and this, that and the other. And it was just all kind of a running joke - and not something we could get into.

I've come up with a theory that will almost undoubtedly end with me winning a Nobel Prize. No big deal. It strikes me that the terror, fear and general despondency of the world - the dystopian quality of the past decade or so - makes perfect sense in the context of the film "Back to the Future: Part II. " For those not familiar with the crown jewel of the "Back to the Future" series, the second film finds Marty McFly traveling to the future with...
