"Zuuuuus!" That was perhaps the loudest and most frequent chant - in honor of Blackhawks center Michal Handzus - at the United Center during the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs, and it has returned several times since. It's how the fans salute the 37-year-old when he throws himself in front of shots, helps shut down the opposition's power play and wins big faceoffs. "He's been a leader ever since he got here, I think," 25-year-old forward Ben Smith said. "He's done the jobs that a lot of guys don't like to do, and he's done them really well.

Any player who tells you home-ice advantage makes no difference is probably lying. No doubt the Blackhawks were thrilled Sunday's Game 7 of the Western Conference finals was in Chicago and not in the Kings' home arena. "[Game 5 on Wednesday] was probably the loudest I've ever [heard the crowd] in the United Center," Hawks defenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson said Saturday. "It was unbelievable the way the crowd gave us energy. " The Hawks were hoping the fans saved their best for last.

Hockey players can have lightning speed, nimble hands and a net-ripping slapshot, but if they don't have a nickname, they don't really have anything. You've got to have a nickname in hockey, a sport that hands them out like no other in professional sports. RedEye asked several Blackhawks about the origins of their alternative monikers and their favorites on the team. . MICHAL "ROSEY" ROZSIVAL What's your hockey nickname and how'd you get it? "People just call me 'Rosey.' It just comes from my last name, obviously.

Desperation can be a good thing. Especially when it's about all you have left. Use any cliché you want: The Blackhawks' quest to repeat as Stanley Cup champs was on the line Wednesday at the United Center, down 3-1 to the L.A. Kings in the Western Conference finals. And really, the Blackhawks needed some combination of desperate and dazzling to force a Game 6. Otherwise, they were simply doomed. FIRST PERIOD Dazzling: What's this? Why, it's a Blackhawks power play goal!

The debate about the Washington Redskins' name has been a hot issue for a while, and for good reason. Yet it seems strange the Blackhawks are getting a free pass. I'm not about to say the Blackhawks logo is worse than the Redskins', a name that is unquestionably a slur and shouldn't have a place in sports, or life. I even understand how people don't take exception to the logo. But it's not about degrees of wrongness. It's about being wrong. The Blackhawks were named after the original owner's infantry division in World War I, nicknamed the Black Hawk division, which was named after the Native...

If you follow more than five non-robots on Twitter, then over the weekend you learned that the NHL lockout ended and the 2012-13 season will start Saturday (sans the 2012). Are you a casual sports fan looking for a new excuse to fire up your flatscreen for hours on end this winter? Look no further than the Blackhawks, my frenz. The shortened, compressed schedule favors the Hawks for two reasons: 1) Loads of back-to-back games mean backup goalies matter more. Although starter Corey Crawford needs to improve this year, backup Ray Emery did well for a...

Moms are the best. They're always there when you need them, especially when it comes to advice. Of course, that requires that you actually pay attention. There were moments in Sunday's Game 5 between the Blackhawks and Minnesota when the message was getting through - and others when you weren't so sure. FIRST PERIOD You should know better. Come on, Brent Seabrook . You saw how the Wild broke your team's back with a late power-play goal in Game 4, and still you go and take a silly tripping penalty at center ice 29 seconds into...

There must be something in the water (ice?) at the United Center. As the Blackhawks race toward the Olympic break - including a monthlong stretch with no games in Chicago - it's clear they have a successful formula. Entering Tuesday, the defending Stanley Cup champs (30-8-10, 70 points) lead the Central Division and again find themselves among the NHL's elite. That can't be coincidence, right? "Every championship team, every winning team has one thing in common: All the players like each other and get along on and off the ice," said Patrick Sharp,...

Wednesday's Game 7 against Detroit is the Blackhawks' biggest showdown of the season. Winner moves on, loser starts summer vacation. So you can be sure that prior to puck drop, as fans listen to music blaring throughout the United Center, the Hawks will rev up the locker room with their favorite tunes. Odds are they won't be jamming to the Rolling Stones' "Start Me Up," even though Mick Jagger and the boys played the Madhouse on Madison on Tuesday. Considering that they've come back from a 3-1 deficit in the series, however, they might want to include Pearl Jam's...

They've tangled in three straight NHL postseasons. They've shed blood - and tears - on the ice. They've engaged in wars of words off the ice. They are the Blackhawks and rival Vancouver Canucks. Tuesday night, they meet yet again - this time in Vancouver. Call it a re-re-re-rematch. It's one of those games that you just must watch in case something controversial happens again. Before they battle on the ice, though, they battle in a RedEye faceoff.   RECORD BLACKHAWKS: 29-15-6, 64 points CANUCKS: 30-15-4, 64 points   ...

Quietly - and to the surprise of some - Corey Crawford is becoming one of the NHL's best goaltenders. "As a team we want to keep raising our level of play as the stage gets bigger and bigger, but I think if there's anyone that's doing that, it's Crow," Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews said after Crawford made 25 saves in Game 1. Entering Wednesday, he led all net minders in the 2014 postseason with a 1.90 goals-against average and his save...

Jonathan Toews and Corey Crawford were huge in the Blackhawks' win over the L.A. Kings in Game 1 at the United Center. Toews had plenty of praise for the goaltender's clutch saves, and Crawford says the rules are made to protect goalies.

Thanks to Corey Crawford & Co., it's still hockey season in Chicago. The defending champs are now only three wins away from a return trip to the Stanley Cup Final, which means it's time for bandwagon fans to come out of the woodwork and buy Patrick Kane jerseys at Sports Authority. I'm the absolute wrong person to judge someone's Blackhawks loyalty. But I've never pretended to be a big supporter. I root for this team because it's positive for the city's economy and warm weather + tight women's Hawks shirts = cool.

The Blackhawks season is unraveling before frustrated fans' eyes. Once the top team in the NHL, the Blackhawks are mired in a six-game losing streak (0-5-1) - five of them on the road - with five more games starting them in the face before they return to the home ice of the United Center. "It's easy right now to be negative and point fingers," Patrick Sharp said. "But now's the time we need to stay together more than ever and be a team and come out of this. The Blackhawks opened their defense of the Stanley Cup on Thursday, and waiting for them in the first round was rival St. Louis. 5-0.  That's Australian Blackhawks fan Paul Wilkins' record when he attends games at the United Center. Hard to argue with that success.  Same goes for just about everything Hawks related Sunday. Wilkins ( @pwilkins10 ) and more than 21,000 others saw Chicago knock off the L.A. Kings 3-1 in Game 1 of the Western Conference finals Sunday at the United Center. The Hawks take a 1-0 series lead into Game 2 on Wednesday at the United Center. Goals by Brandon Saad, Duncan Keith and Jonathan Toews backed Corey Crawford's 25 saves.

Blackhawks fans would be interested to learn three things about Paul Wilkins' life. One, the first time the native of Australia came to the United Center (and America), Patrick Kane scored his first NHL goal. Two, the 31-year-old has attended four Blackhawks games, and the Hawks won all four (including Sunday's Game 5 against Minnesota). Three, he's staying in Chicago until June 9. Last year during the Stanley Cup Final, Wilkins traveled 18 1/2 hours plus an eight-hour layover from Melbourne, and slept on the couches of kind Chicagoans for a...
