Susan Stursberg, the co-owner and familiar face behind Gold Star's bar, died of liver and pancreatic cancer Monday morning. She was 45. Stursberg took on the role of bartender at the popular Wicker Park dive in 1990, when her mother bought the bar. “She loved working here, loved being here,” said her mother, Mary Anne Reid Stursberg.  “Even when she was sick, she said she wished she were working.” Stursberg was diagnosed earlier this...

A Chicago bartender spent his Valentine's Day in the heart of downtown, but it wasn't for a date.  In a YouTube video published Friday, Peter Vitale filmed his experience handing out Valentines and buying meals for homeless individuals he says he passes everyday.  "Be the change you want to see in the world," he concludes in the video.  Vitale told NBC5 that there's not enough random acts of kindness in the world , and that he...

What's the worst part of Jan. 1 (besides untagging yourself from unflattering photos from the previous night's revelry)? Yep, it's the hangover. Fortunately, the four finalists of RedEye's 2013 Best Bartender competition have a few tried-and-true-tricks for banishing the morning-after blech.  Meg Silvas Dusek's Board & Beer and Punch House "A hangover is nothing a trip to the movies can't fix. What is a bar-gument, you say? For as long as there have been watering holes, there have been disagreements. Some people prefer martinis with gin, some with vodka. Bar-guments is here to settle some longstanding bar conflicts once and for all. This week: Should you expect a buyback from a bartender after a few rounds? Yep Yes, but let me clarify what I mean by "expect. " Anybody who goes into a bar and throws around cash with the expectation that the bartender has never seen paper money before and will...

Nicole Boudreau stares intently into the camera, lip-synching along with a booming recording of herself as the name of her band glitters in bright lights behind her. This music video for the Royalty's addictive song “Bartender” isn't happening on some Hollywood sound stage, though. It's to the right of the bar inside the Blue Line Lounge and Grill, just under the Damen blue line stop. The spot's retro vibe matches perfectly with the soul-influenced rockers, who may not be unknown much longer thanks to being tagged as an MTV Buzzworthy artist.

Sometimes I wish I didn't know anything about football. Because if I didn't, I might have enjoyed Sunday's two-point disaster against Detroit. I might even be smiling now, just like the bartender who served me and my friends during the game. For instance, when Jay Cutler and Brandon Marshall hooked up on the opening drive for three straight completions capped by a 32-yard pass and a 7-0 lead, the chipper bartender said, "We got a goal! Uh, a touchdown!" And then she laughed and said, "I don't watch a lot of sports.

Mini-review: Drop 1909 N. Lincoln Ave. 312-291-9584 Rating: 3 (out of 4) Off to a good start Oh, those dreaded two words: "Last call!" When I'm at a bar late enough to hear them, they're usually met first with confusion - "What time is it? Oh my god!" - followed by a scramble to order one last drink before cabbing home. Late-night bars are few and far between, making Drop, a month-old lounge in Lincoln Park, notable for its 4 a.m. (5 a.m. Saturday) license in a fairly residential 'hood.

Written and, for the first time, directed by Illinois native Diablo Cody (“Juno”), “Paradise” hinges on a loss of faith that even the sternest believer might have after a near-fatal plane crash. The Violet Hour bartenders Henry Prendergast and Robert F. Haynes III hope to replicate that cocktail lounge's success with the opening of Analogue in Logan Square this fall. The just-announced bar at 2523 N. Milwaukee Avenue draws inspiration from the "punk rock, queer, dark, dirty, discos and dive bars of 1970s and '80s Chicago," according to a release. Prendergast and Haynes aren't releasing many further details, but do promise a "three-pronged" cocktail program and New Orleans-leaning food from chef Alfredo Nogueira of ...

Slingin' cocktails for a whole party full of people is difficult, especially if you're trying to replicate drinks as good as those you'd find at a fancy bar. Crafthouse Cocktails aims to help. The new Chicago company launches with three flavors of premixed, booze-included drinks, due to hit stores this weekend or early next week. At a high-end cocktail bar, everything from glassware to garnishes adds extra detail to your drinks. It's no surprise, then, that ice is the next frontier. The Aviary blew minds when it opened in 2011 with its alcohol-filled ice orbs, and now bartenders across the city are pushing the limits of what can be frozen into water. But these stunners are more than just a pretty embellishment: Flavored ice adds new tastes and aromas to cocktails as the cubes melt, making the last sip of your drink quite different than the first.
