There's no question that Chicago is a big burger town, but the scene just got a major boost with four new burger joints firing up their grills. We took an early look to see how they're stacking up. The Burger Point 1900 S. State St. 312-842-1900 Best for: South Loopers looking for a closer option than Epic Burger. It's not necessarily worth a trip unless you're in the neighborhood. Who's there: Condo owners from the building upstairs. Tasting notes: Though we weren't asked how we'd like our patty cooked (it arrived medium well)

Publican Quality Meats 837 W. Fulton Market. 312-445-8977 Rating: !!! (out of four) If there is any chef in Chicago that puzzles the Great Burgerelli, it is Paul Kahan. Though this talented fellow helms the kitchen at not one but two meat-centric restaurants, The Publican and newly-opened butcher shop Publican Quality Meats, he has not a single burger on either of his menus. Luckily, Mr. Kahan has seen the light and instituted Burger, Beer, and Bourbon Night at Publican Quality Meats.

Burger review: Fatty's Burgers & More 2665 N. Clark St. 773-248-3288 Rating: ! ½ (out of four) According to popular wisdom, everything is bigger in Texas. Fatty's Burgers & More, a Texas-bred operation that recently set up shop in Chicago (the creator's brother helms the Lincoln Park location), certainly confirmed this for fact for The Great Burgerelli. The chain's piece de resistance is The Lineman ($13.99), a preposterously large full-pound cheeseburger that intimidated even this esteemed burger seeker.

I was having a beer with an old friend from college, and somehow this hypothetical question came up: if you had to give up either sex or cheese for the rest of your life, which would it be? Now at first I thought the answer was obvious, and I kind of didn't understand what there was to discuss, but she put on this pained expression and said, “Weeeellllll, I dunno. Close call.” She went on to say that one of her best friends swore up and down that she'd give up sex long before she gave up cheese.

Burger review: Parts and Labor 2700 N. Milwaukee Ave. 773-360-7040 Rating: !! 1/2 (out of 4) A man cannot live on one type of burger alone--certainly not a beef-obsessed man like Burgerelli. Thick char burgers certainly are satisfying, but my tummy has rumbled recently for the lace-like edges of a pressed griddle burger. Edzo's Burger Shop fits the bill, but wherefore art the rest of the griddle burger barons? Parts and Labor, a mechanic-themed bar and burger restaurant that opened mid-December in Logan Square, serves only these precious pressed patties.
