Two Chicago men were accused of stealing a backpack and cellphone at gunpoint from a CTA Red Line passenger Wednesday morning.

The charges come on the heels of a Chicago Police Department announcement that the CTA saw a 36 percent reduction in electronics thefts this winter.

Auturo Banks, 30, of the 6100 block of South Wabash Avenue, and Vincent Russell, 23, of the 500 block of East 42nd Street, were both arrested around 7 a.m. a block south of the 47th Street Red Line station.

Russell allegedly held a gun to a Red Line passenger riding a train near the Garfield station while Banks went through the man's pockets and stole his backpack and cell phone, according to court records.

Police officers found the backpack discarded in a dumpster outside of a Wendy's in the 5400 block of South Wells Street, the police report said.

Banks and Russell were brought to the Cook County Criminal Courthouse on Thursday afternoon and ordered held in lieu of $250,000 bond.
