Chance the Rapper, Lil' Durk, Vic Mensa, Lil' Bibby named to 2014 XXL Magazine 'Freshmen' list

Four Chicago rappers have landed spots on the XXL Magazine "Freshmen" list and cover for 2014.

Chance the Rapper, Lil' Bibby, Lil' Durk and Vic Mensa are representing for Chicago this year. They are the first Chicago acts to appear since Lupe Fiasco did back in 2008. (Chief Keef was technically on last year's cover but was included as a "bonus pick.")

The "Freshmen" tradition began in 2008 as a way to spotlight up-and-coming rap acts. Criticism of the cover is expected. You can bet that people are going to spend a majority of the day online arguing about the list when it drops. But still each year the entire rap community waits with bated breath to see who will be featured.

As for the other honorees, they include: Rich Homie Quan, Isiah Rashad, Kevin Gates, Jon Connor, Jarren Benton, August Alsina, Ty Dolla $ign, Troy Ave.

This is the point in the post where I pull out that video we shot in 2012 of Chance and Vic Spencer free styling over a Ghetto Mafia instrumental, isn't it? Yes. Yes it is.
