Lauren Krause wearing an outfit from Milk Handmade (Lauren Krause )
5137 N. Clark St. 773-234-7053
Milk Handmade, a two-year-old boutique on the border of Uptown and Andersonville, has a very clear purpose: focus on local designers and eco-friendly fashion. Owner Hallie Borden knew from the start that this was her area of choice. "The neighborhood is very supportive of small businesses," said Borden. Step inside and you'll find her green philosophy come to life. The store features repurposed furniture as display tables and racks that Borden pieced together with metal pipes. From milk crates to mirrors, Borden's mission was to give the store a rustic farmhouse feel, but with a chic and modern touch.
I chose this skirt (Ella Lai, $118) because of the texture and shape, which it so happens, is perfect for twirling. The hand-painted silk top (Xsilk by Danik, $138) was the perfect balance to the flirty organza skirt and the leather belt (Muse, $54) pulled everything together. I topped the look off with two finds from Chicago jewelry designers: a quirky letter necklace ($36) by Michelle Starbuck and a chunky metal bracelet ($62) from Shades of Grey by Attalie Dexter. An edgy snakeskin bag with a gold chain by JJ Winters ($88) completed my one-of-a kind outfit.
Where to wear it: Your birthday party or cocktail hour.
-Balance an A-line skirt with a boxy top anchored by a belt.
-Don't be afraid to add pops of color to a neutral look, like the red in this necklace.
