Chicago Loot Drop to hold "Press Start To Drink" Benefit

  • Coming Sunday, March 30, to The Public House Theatre in Lakeview. And just what is this "Press START To Drink" thing, you may ask? Imagine, if you will, two fantastic video game-themed films screened back-to-back on an enormous 20-foot screen, coupled with a bar stocked with copious quantities of beer, cider and an assortment of other delicious beverages.

This weekend is going to be full of fun geeky things to do! Saturday will have Spider-Man visiting the Chicago Cultural Center as part of Earth Hour; Saturday night has the first ever ChiFi Con; and Sunday night will have the Chicago Loot DropPress Start to Drink” fundraiser to benefit the Comer Children’s Hospital and Child’s Play!

With that in mind, I had a brief chat with Mike Chuck Bretzlaff from Chicago Loot Drop about their event, where folks will be able to hang out, have drinks and watch two of the better video game movies out there, “Scott Pilgrim versus the World” and “Wreck It Ralph.”

I asked what inspired them to come up with the event, why a particular video game movie was overlooked, what the best video game movie ever is, and who would you rather date: Ramona Flowers or Knives Chau:

Elliott Serrano: Chicago Loot Drop is doing another fundraiser, so I've gotta ask where the idea to do a video game-based movie screening came from?

Mike Chuck Bretzlaff: Well, you know, we kinda like video games.

And movies.

And beer.

So we were like - "hey, let's get the three pieces of this Triforce together!"

Drinks may have had something to do with an event called “Press START To Drink” too.  This is technically the second time we've done this. The first one was way back in 2012: Mortal Kombat vs. Street Fighter. It was so epic, Ryu even made an appearance. Here's proof.

And it was so much fun we wanted to do another one.  But this time with good movies!

Serrano: What, no love for "The Last Starfighter"? That movie had a video game in it!

Bretzlaff: Brilliant idea for our next Press START, for sure. And maybe we could even convince Rogue Synapse to bring their arcade cabinet to the event? Now that would be cool.

Serrano: Here’s a tough one: "The Wizard" starring Fred Savage - great video game movie or the GREATEST video game movie?

Bretzlaff: This has actually been discussed among the Chicago Loot Drop crew and we're sad to say that the jury is still out. But considering how Jimmy played Ninja Gaiden, we all agree that his gaming skills are TOPS!

Maybe put us down for great

Serrano: Final question: Ramona Flowers or Knives Chau? Answer carefully as you will be judged.

Bretzlaff: Well, Ramona has a hammer and blunt weapons trump edge weapons.  Plus, hitching a ride through door thingies would mean never waiting for the bus again.

However, Knives is a genuinely cool person and doesn't have 7 evil exes.

So, let's go with ... Kim Pine! Duh.  "WE ARE SEX BOB-OMB! 1-2-3-4!"

Serrano: Good choice!
